Dragon 377 - Familiars by Artifice

Just in time for my birthday, a new article full of familiars (I love more familiars). While tagged as an Eberron article, most of the content is easily useable in other campaign settings (the article also includes some suggestions on converting it to other worlds) and focuses on the new artificer class (most of the new familiar feats have being an artificer as a prerequisite, as does the one paragon path). New mechanic, there is now a familiar magic item slot and a few sample items.

I'm also happy to see the return of some old favorites, such as the magpie, marmoset, and octopus. I'm also considering getting one of the new homunculi for my paragon artificer.

Nice, low-key article. I like that this seems to be foreshadowing some of the creatures likely to appear in the 4E Eberron Campaign book.

No artificers in my Eberron game right now to use (indeed, my current mini-campaign is all primal). Still, they are options and I have a few players who like changing characters periodically.

What I need is an RPGA sanctioned floating flask of rum as a familiar and a pewter mug as an implement for my chaos sorcerer Diedem the hammered.

So.... uhhh.....
You can reproduce the effect of the Shardbound Familiar (Eberron) feat by infusing your familiar with a bit of phase mist (Dungeon Master’s Guide® 2, page 61).
When did the DMG2 come out? >_>

What a cruel thing to do, reference to books we don't have yet...
Though hmm.... The fact that it is coming up does make me think perhaps say next month we will begin to see more previews for it, if they are beginning to bring out articles that make relation to it.

As for the familiars, yay for construct ones. Also the Minor Foulspawn I want to take since just so weird, and awesome. I am tempted to tell one player of mine to take it since he is a "Flux Storm Chaser" and I can see a flux storm creating such a creature and be great to see him adopting it.

It's never explicitly mentioned, but I don't see why not. If your blade is in passive mode, you wield it normally, and you'd let go of it to place it in active mode.

Would it be posssible to use a Bard's own Songblade as a Floating Weapon Familiar?
It doesn't say the floating weapon can actually attack or do anything a normal familiar cannot (unlike dancing weapons made by the Artificer power). Plus, it raises the question of what happens when the weapon is "destroyed". its a bit of a small rule's wrinkle.
