On an appearance on the Discourse Podcast from Playlist, writer/directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein stated they have finished he script to a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

“I think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed,” Goldstein said.

The pair also addressed the underperformance of the film, which made $208 million global box office against a $150 million budget.

“It was very much a product of not-so-great timing when the first movie came out. It came out four days before the Super Mario movie, which broke records,” Daley said. “It came out a month after Wizards of the Coast changed the official gaming license, prompting many D&D fans to boycott the game, and I don’t think the marketing did enough to tell people who weren’t already fans that this movie might be for them. Yeah, so it was a perfect storm of all of those elements, and we’ll see.

“I mean, look, it’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one. We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we’ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.”

As we all know, there always seems to be some mitigating situation making it difficult to get together for a second session.

This comes following news of a Ravenloft television series from Netflix earlier this week.

To compare it to D&D: Honor Among Thieves, one was number 1 on Prime for months and the other is 5th.

D&D was the one that did better while Prime had it. Honor Among Thieves also but up big numbers on Netflix and of course on Paramount it was in the top 10 for 18 months.

Primes a lot bigger than Paramount though.

Wasn't a competition more indication of non event movies with wait for streaming mentality.

Yes, Honor Among Thieves did better on Prime than Masters of the Universe is doing.

Honor Among Thieves was ALSO doing better on Netflix and Paramount+, while Paramount+ was turning a quarterly profit regularly

I still think they need to kill someone off early in the film and have that actor come back as a new character the group meets and never once address the similarities
The reincarnation spell is right there. Chris Pine gets popped early on and is reincarnated by Doric as Stavros Halkias the dwarf or something

I think the other thing in MotU's favor is that Mattel made money off of the tie-in merchandise. I think Mattel is far better at that than Hasbro is plus there is an expectation that D&D can perform closer to M:tG which it just can't. As a MotU fan in my 50s I was disappointed that the tone was all over the place and it seemed they made a move for us old guys when it should have been targeted at much younger audiences. I'd pay to see a D&D sequel in theaters but won't pay for a MotU sequel.

I wish Netflix had an interest in this AND Ravenloft. I'm dubious if RL will make it out of development hell but this is a known property and I'd love to see a sequel.
Netflix is extremely metrics-driven. If all of their existing D&D-adjacent stuff did great numbers from here on out, it certainly would improve the chances of them backing DADHAT2.

Yeah. There was no direct tie-in product back then because the D&D studio didn't really talk to the entertainment offices on product coordination.

Hopefully the new franchise format means that there is merch and actual game stuff for whatever D&D media happens in the future.
