Dungeons of Dragons (Dungeon-building help wanted)

First Post
Hey ENworld (man, it's been a while since I've come here).

I'm looking to build a special dragon-themed dungeon in response to one of my players looking to take Dragon Disciple levels. The idea being that when the players level at the end of it, she'll take her first level of DD (I asked her about this plan and she was thrilled with it).

However, there's an issue. While I do have the general shape and entrance challenges in mind, I'm not really set on monsters. The party of 4 is at the moment all 5th level, and have just received the cryptic message that will direct them to this dungeon. Unfortunately the number of appropriate-difficulty draconic enemies to stick in is kind of low. At the moment, most of my choices are drakes.

One idea I'm considering is making the process of getting inside in the first place difficult enough that preparation will take them up to 7th level before they can enter (which was also fine with the future Dragon Disciple player. She said she couldn't decide whether to take 5 or 7 bard levels before going DD, and told me she'd do whichever was more convenient for me as far as dungeon design goes).

So yeah, basically I'm looking for appropriate dragon-themed monsters for a 5th or 7th level party. And I'm thinking the final challenge, if I waited for them to be 7th level would be against an adult crystal dragon who would formally "test" them. A really difficult challenge, but being a good dragon he'd allow them to rest and fully prepare themselves before they took him on. Maaaaaaaybe he'd even strike for nonlethal if they lost (maybe), and he'd probably call the battle a win for them before he actually got reduced to 0.

Well kobolds are the traditional low level dragon theme monster. Given their proclivity for traps and tight spots they could inded make getitng into the place highly hazardous. Pop a couple class levels on a few real quick if you wanna up their cr's.

As for the dragon, theres a 4e article that details how a good dragon might deal with non-evil adventurers that aren't trying to be total jerks. They have a sort of dueling code: they give up when bloodied (reduced to half health), and don't seek killing blows.

In order to make that work in pathfinder, assume that part of being a test/guardian beast in this case means that the dragon uses similar rules. However nothing says he has to make it easy. Give him a death watch effect via scroll or sorc casting or something, and give him an amulet of mighty fists with the merciful enchant.

Other Dragon Disciples or Dragon Shaman candidates.

Dragon slayers, who want to get to the dragon's loot.

Elementals keyed by the elemental nature of the dragon.

Ditto for mephits.

Undead remains of fallen heroes and villains. (Burning skeletons are good for this.)

Gases, ready to be ignited by a dragons breath, or pooled poisonous gas.

If your dragons have some sort of society (ours do) let them find an abandoned dragon temple/school/testing ground within the dungeon. Being faced with dragon-style puzzles and riddles and basically having to undertake part of the tests a young dragon would have to do should keep them occupied for a while.

Elite kobolds with class levels. Possibly half-dragons.

I also like the idea of having other DD candidates fighting for the title.

Make the BBEG a powerful Dragon with various human and kobold minions. If powerful Wizards can control and have dragon familiars etc...why not have the dragons do the same.

I like the idea of his half-dragon offspring..perhaps half-dragon half elves etc....

Having to go in for a specific item (ie. Soul Gem, Magic Jar, phylactery) that is in the BBEG hoard may be cliche, but still works for me
