Elfs

Crothian

First Post
Anyone have any experience with this game? I just posted a review on it and while I haven't had a chance to play I'm hoping to at Gen Con. It is a small game by a small publisher (Adept Press) one of the Forge and IPR people. THe game is crude and immature and power gaming and looks fun. The rules are relaly simple, but I like how they fit together and encourage the type of play the game supports. So, anyone play or just read this game?

The plural of elf is elfs, unless your last name is Tolkien. :)
Nope, it's Elves, language changes over time, and Tolkien may have started this change.

A quick Google for "Elves" gets about 1.4 million results, a google for "elfs" gets about 140,000, 10 times less, and a spellchecking suggestion asking did you mean to search for "Elves"?

Search for "Santa's Elfs" and you get 361 hits on google, "Santas Elves" gets you about 27,500. Looking for Keebler Elfs/Elves also strongly favors "Elves", including what the Keebler company uses. These are two distinctly non-Tolkien, non-Gamer uses of the plural of "Elf" in everyday use that use "Elves" predominantly apparently.

Before Tolkien, "Elfs" may have been the common plural, over the last few decades, it's changed to "Elves".

Nah, "elves" had taken the field long before JRR was a gleam in his daddy's eye. Only one author in Bartleby (Hawthorne) uses the "elfs" form. Even Shakespeare elved it.

What Tolkien was responsible for was "Dwarves", to go along with "Elves". "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was common, last century. Tolkien started catching on around 1960+, and "Dwarves" has been increasing in usage, since.
