Did you like the Malazan books (S. Erikson)? I did not finish the second one. To many echoes of Glen Cook's Black Company. Should I try again?

Looking some of the books mentioned in here up online has once again reminded me that some used [anything] sellers are delusional.

The Perfect Dreyfus Emergencies series, Alastair Reynolds. And Chasm City. I found those more interesting than his Absolution Gap series.

The Vorkosigan Saga, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Begin with The Warrior's Apprentice (the first published book). Classic sci-fi with a great central protagonist who fights against the odds of his deformities.

Im never clear myself in terms of what constitutes urban fantasy. When I hear it, ones that come first to mind are Pratchett's Watch books and the Hawk and Fisher series, rather than Rivers of London for example.

Yup, I think people generally mean Charles de Lint, Anita Blake, Harry Dresden, Twilight (gag), Rivers of London, and the like. As well as a metric ton of romantasy with elves and vampires (some of which is very good).

And yes, it’s generally contemporary. I’m always a bit conflicted on whether to put Rachel Aaron’s DFZ (Detroit Free Zone) books in urban fantasy. I mean, they are because you have wizards and dragons in modern Detroit, but they’re also basically set in Shadowrun with the numbers filed off. So they’re set about fifty years into the future after magic returned to the world. There are also a few cyborgs.

I can’t say I could bring myself to do so with either series.
