One I don’t see mentioned is The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks, which shows some of the influence from her writing the Avatar: the Last Airbender comics. Some of the best stuff she’s done.

In the “probably nobody else has read this” category is Leave it to Chance by James Robinson, drawn by Paul Smith (his experience drawing Lockheed in X-men shows here).

I loved Leave It To Chance! Some of Robinson and Smith’s best work, and in a just world it’d have been a hit.

I think Shaun Tan’s wordless graphic novel The Arrival. It’s the story of immigrant experiences, with a gorgeous surreal streak.

I’ve just remembered The Golden Age, which was fantastic and led to Robinson getting the Starman gig. I based a Savage Worlds campaign on it (no superpowers, the PCs were ex-OSS negotiating a post-Paperclip world before the Korean War; all the NPCs were DC superheroes with no powers or not-yet-famous people like Edda Van Heemstra).

IIRC my players had no idea who the tiny actress with the Dutch accent they met in New York was. They had no problems recognising Elvis and Grace Kelly, though.

The finale, taken from The Golden Age, was discovering that Joe McCarthy had been a pilot in Berlin at the end of WW2 and had been transplanted with Hitler’s brain.

Sadly, Gaiman and Willingham turned out to be asshats or worse, but Sandman and Fables are still great…

Yes, Sandman one of the only graphic novels in my collection, which is a trifle embarrassing. I still think it holds up well, though he’s always been better with vibes than plot. I also enjoyed Watchmen, though a deconstruction of superhero comics was somewhat wasted on someone who doesn’t read a lot of comics

I definitely think both count and both are very good. Somewhat self-indulgent at times in both cases but very good.

Seems it's not on Image's website any more, but mycomicshop has it for US$6.

I liked it because the town in the setting where most of the mysteries happened was in the skeleton of a fallen titan or something. Pretty cool, and the art was that Italian clean-line look that I really like - kind of like Dylan Dog.

If you can track them down, the Realm by Arrow Caliber (not to be confused with the comic of same name from Image that's more recent). Very D&D.
