Favorite revival era Doctor Who?

For me, it's definitely Peter Capaldi (with Stefan Moffat as writer/showrunner, even if some seem to not like him), and with 'Heaven Sent' easily being the best Dr Who episode ever. I have most of the 'reboot' on DVD, from Christopher Ecclestone to Jodie Whittaker. Although I have to admit I still have not seen the Jodie Whittaker episodes yet (or anything more recent). Not that I have anything against Jodie Whittaker or anything (after all, I did buy all the DVD's), but I tend to 'consume' Dr Who material in periods. There are periods in my life where I happily watch the series, and then periods where I take a break from the series. It seems I currently am on such a break.

Voted Tenant but I did enjoy the Riversong arc in Matt’s Smith’s run (with a dash of Capadli) and the Ponds remain my favorite companions. But Tenant is one of those actors I could watch reading the dictionary and be entertained.

A few years ago I would have said Tennant, hands down, but having watched Matt Smith's stuff again recently, I really identify with his autistic-coded portrayal.

Buuuuuut now I'm rewatching Capaldi, and there's a frustration in his version of the character that I identify with now that I'm older and trying to figure out what that means to me.

I did say Smith, because I felt he was the best at taking some mediocre writing and making it shine.

Someone somewhere noted that Matt Smith had an uncanny ability to go from innocent, child-like wonder to haggard, wizened, and ancient in one line of dialogue, and I agree.

I'm going with Tennant but I think Smith and Capaldi were perfect as well. I got off the train when I learned the Doctor would be the actress from Broadchurch and it wasn't Olivia Coleman. And whomever mentioned the companions, they work as great foils to the Doctor and their roles cant be discounted.

I agree all the actors were fantastic and generally gave it their all, but could be let down by the writing. So there’s also a bit of “who was your favourite revival Dr Who writer” but they were all quite variable. My answer is basically Paul Cornell but he only did three episodes.
