Well, the evil high priest gating in a huge fiendish beholder worked out just about perfectly. I even cut out a 150 foot cone template out of construction paper to measure the area of the anti-magic ray exactly. I ended up getting 4 PCs and a summoned ice devil with the AMR. So, the party cleric, sorcerer and psion were all "powerless" while in the zone...the ice devil winking out was a small price to pay for that.
Unfortunately, no minions were close enough to the sorcerer to grapple him & he managed to crawl 15 feet on the ground out of the AMZ as his move action and then zap the beholder pretty good from right below.
The beholder & the pit fiend managed to take the focus off of the evil high priest, at least temporarily.
After taking care of the beholder, the players finally managed to trap the evil high priest within an anti-magic zone and dropped him down to well below 0. One PC then attempted to saw his head off (he had an evil artifact on his head) - but, once he took the head outside the AMZ, the evil high priest's Death Pact was invoked and he got a True Resurrection as an immediate action.
However, since it was already like 90+ minutes past our normal gaming time limit, we decided to call it a night since the party was on the verge of victory as it was... the EHP was going to use his contingent Word of Recall to retreat to a safe area, but really did not have a lot of "backup" there in terms of allies. (He cast Contingency via Miracle)
But, since the campaign had gone on for 2 1/2 years and I had really wanted to finish last year, I just gave them the flavor text of what happened after they destroyed the artifact and that was it.
