Food and water supply...

Arravis

First Post
I'm thinking of making a food/water needed per day chart for my desert campaign and I'd like to see if there are rules on this already. What's the amount of food and water a person needs in a day and what if anything modifies that. (My DMG isn't with me... can't look it up, ugh).

A character consumes one day's worth of trail rations per day (gasp!). Trail rations are listed in the equipment chapter in the PHB.

IIRC, IRL food consumption will be somewhat lower in the desert.

Don't know the exact numbers for water.

I'm just trying to find out, on average, how many pounds of food and how many gallons of water is needed by people who live in the desert...

Come on man! think!:D I don't have hard and fast numbers but then neither do you NYAH! I would guess normal movement AT NIGHT you would need one waterskin per day and regular meals. I would rule that unless they used trail rations they also need to consume a handful of salt (and this includes the fodd and water spell). If they fight the water triples and the food stays the same EXCEPT the handful of salt is also required reguardless of the food used. If they travel during the heat of the day quadruple the water and double the salt requirement(2 handfuls without iron rations, 1 with)

As mentioned earlier, there is a section about this in the DMG.

But, if you wanted much more specific rules, you could use the water/food consumption rules from Dark Sun. They seemed pretty good for a desert-based world/campaign/location, providing a bit more information and options. I don't have my boxed set with me though, so I can't give you specifics. Sorry :(

"Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink."
Come now, water is one thing, but let us not forget the cold temperatures that occur at night. You may want to think about some warm blankets. Besides, if the party doesn't find somewhere to rest during the highest temp. (i.e. noon) you may want to consider having them take subduel damage when they travel at night without some warmth. (ever spend the whole day in the sunlight, how tired do you feel afterwards. The desert is much warmer!!!)
