But why do you need two separate races of elf for this split. It could just be a fluff difference. One group likes to pretend they are high and mighty, the other likes to live close to nature; but they are both still elves. I could handle that. Why do they have to create a new race for things that are better handled just with story?
Why not? If Elves are "naturally gifted" for both wizardry and archery, why not create two sub-types of Elves? If every take on this matter so far lead to different racial subraces, why not end the endless Elven-subrace creation by creating two definite versions?

Also, it adds new story opportunities - The Elven race is split - there are Drow, their are the natural world Elves, and the fey world Eladrin. They have drifted apart, and, like so often in fantasy, if you want to highlight the difference between two sides, show off their different culture, you make them different races.

Otherwise, the Human race would be enough for all of us, and we only need more if we come up with "true" aliens instead of humans with bumps on their foreheads (or pointy ears).

Bah, in 4th edition, even the human race has drifted apart, becoming normal humans, tieflings, shadar-kai, and probably something other that hasn't been officially published, but will be eventually.
Humans have now become elves, with round ears instead of pointy ears.

Hahahahahahaha. :D

Huh? Did I fork the thread accidentally? Oops, mind your mouse cursor, Mustrum...

But maybe it's better this way - the Original Topic was _not_ about Eladrin and Elves. ;)

Yeah, I'd say it's a pretty reasonable fork, intentional or not.

Personally, the human race is enough for me. And if I'm going to have other races, I'd prefer them to have a little bit of depth and variety to them, instead of having humans as the only race that lives in a variety of different ways, while every non-human race is all Planet of Hats.

It seems pretty logical to me to have forest-dwelling elves and magical city-dwelling elves as two (or, more likely, dozens of) cultures which belong to the same species. The fact that the elves were a single D&D race that actually had more than one shtick was a good thing about them (and I don't often say nice things about elves).
