Fortunate Fate

No flips for you!
If a character goes down due to failing a massive damage save, does fortunate fate kick in?

Fortunate fate is a contingent heal spell that activates when the warded creature drops below 0 hit points, and can revive a creature from below -10 land.

No. Dying from massive damage has nothing to do with hit point loss (except for what provoked the save in the first place). It's like dying from a finger of death spell in that regard.

The situation can arise where the 50+ points of damage you take is sufficient to kill you, without the DMD. In this case, fortunate fate would kick in and heal your hit points. You would still have to make the DMD save, though.

but doesn't it automatically take you to like -9 hps or something like that? I thought it did and that's why I said this would work.

As presented in the PHB (p. 145) - the massive damage rule completely bypasses the HP mechanic (Fort. save DC 15 - fail and die) - So I think Hong's right.

My house rule (can't remember if it's in the DMG or not) is that failing the Fort save puts you at -1 (and I'm debating dumping massive damage all together).
