Foundry VTT Year in Review 2026: Most Popular Game Systems

I bought Foundry VTT years ago and while I have used it as a player once or twice, I have never tried to actually run a game with it. I am already so invested in FGU that I don't see the point, and definitely do not want to buy everything all over again.

I keep waiting for a game that is only available on Foundry that I really want to run, so that will force me to finally put the work in to learn it.

The D&D Beyond Importer module for Foundry allows you to import many elements from books you have purchased on DDB. You do have to pay $4.50/month on the module creator's Patreon to import monsters, but once you import them you can keep them in Foundry, even if you unsubscribe on Patreon. You just don't get updates.
This is truth. I forgot about that. I'm hoping (if it hasn't happened yet) that the creator is able to succeed on his goal of making it so that if you import the 2014 rulebooks you will get 2014 support in Foundry. When I last tried that import it was not QUITE there yet for adding that functionality in.

Other than Ember, developed by the Foundry devs, I wonder if there would ever be a game that's ONLY on Foundry. That said, the Paizo games have all the rules on there for free. I think that's also true for Nimble because they have a pretty permissive SRD, but I could be wrong.

The free D&D SRD system for Foundry includes both the 2014 and the 2024 rules. In terms of automation within Foundry, not even everything in the 2024 D&D rulebooks is automated. Pathfinder has a higher level of automation support in its system for Foundry, IMO, from the few sessions I played in a PF2 game. But I think they are moving D&D in that direction. Regardless of automation, everything gets imported, even it just creates a placeholder feature with the name and description. And recent versions of Foundry and the D&D SRD & rules system make it easier than ever to build your own support for many features and abilities.

This is only possible due to the API on D&D Beyond. And this does not have to be unique to Foundry -- I believe any VTT that could access DDB's API could import from it. Someone would have to write software to do that, but it can be done. I love that DDB is running their own lightweight VTT -- for some folks, that is all they want and need. I like the features of Foundry more, and I am willing to pay in money and time configuring it. Making the content portable to use is a win-win in my book.

I agree. Also, if you are mutli-system (as I am) Foundry is going to be better than having to buy or sub to a different VTT for each system

Daggerheart - this could be temporary. I've been spending a lot of time on the DH subreddit and the Foundrybourne Devs are burnt out. They really want to have an ability to be the foundation for an official module. ALSO the way DH's SRD is written, people can't make money on 3rd party VTT work which is causing people to get really mad

Yeah I’ve read about this on Reddit and it’s really too bad how restrictive the Daggerheart licensing is. It feels like Darrington is screwing over some of their most dedicated fans.

not to put words in his mouth, I think he meant for Foundry given the thread this is in
Then why did he mention Roll20 being official? I get the topic of this thread, I did not bring in other VTTS, the person I quoted did. I only pointed out that the source he quoted (without a link) is errornous.
FG is one of the whitelisted sites they refer to. Alchemy, too now.
It's more than Whitelisted. Whitelisted is for the SRD. FG has the core rulebooks, not just the SRD.
