When Peter stepped in, he saw the future (2026 i think it was).
we learn (though not really in this order)
history says that "the other world" was destroyed. But before it did, other-walter came to this world and has basically been using minions to exact his revenge for the destruction of his world.
future peter and future oliva are married. while future olive is head of fringe.
future broyles is now a sentator
future walter is in prison for his crimes that caused the war of the worlds in the first place.
future astrid is an official fringe division member (and the fringe division is a larger task force that has to deal with future-alternate-walter's mischief such as popping open rifts and such).
oliva's niece is also grown up and a new member of the the fringe divsion too.

in a long round about way, peter eventually goes off on his own to a house where he believes alternate-walter to be. there peter discusses the whole thing with alternate-walter and alternate-walter discusses his rage and eventually reveals that he isn't really at the house (aka a holographic projection while alternate-walter was somewhere else). alternate walter then kills oliva.
walter and peter eventually realize that the only way to stop this from happening is to have made different choices. and since peter was seeing all this by being in the machine, he had a chance to have that knowledge with him when he reawakens in the present.
so back in the present, peter decides instead of destroying the alternate-universe with the machine, he uses the machine to merge the two worlds in that office area. thus, alternate-walter and alternate-oliva come face to face with walter and oliva. peter's idea is that they can all use this office space from both universes as a meeting place and actually talk it out rather than retaliatory strikes going on back and fourth (and ultimately not wanting it to lead to the future he saw).
the very end was, peter vanished after he explained all this(and the others went on talking oblivious to peter's disappearance). and outside we see the watchers all gathered around discussing how "you were right, no one remembers Peter.. because now he never existed"

heart wrenching to see X get killed. that was mega shocker! then when X happened in the end, I could only think - Now what is next?
Which was definitely a shocker because in a round about way, I saw the first thing coming (though I didn't expect it to happen like that, i was just expecting that to be the end result).... but then the thing at the very end i was not expecting at all...

A couple other important points fba827 missed:
[sblock]Peter initially destroys the Red Universe, however they learn the two universes are linked. Destroying the Red Universe triggers the irreconcilable breakdown of the Blue Universe... hence the title of the episode.
A wormhole opens in... Central Park, I think, that leads to the Paleozoic era. Future Peter and Walter realize that they built The Machine, and sent it back in time through the wormhole. Hence, Future Peter/Walter/Astrid/Ella are the "First People." It also explains why it's keyed to Peter and Olivia, and why there are drawings.
However, Walter explains that he can't simply not build it, due to temporal paradox. However, they imbed in The Machine the ability to show Present Peter this Future (the Grey Universe). So Peter instead bridges the two universes, hoping they can work together to stop the rifts.
As a consequence, Peter seemingly ceases to exist in both universes, and never did exist. However, at least the Observers remember him.
Finally, we learn that there's still a problem with the Red Universe, despite Peter not existing. While Walternate still blames Walter, the truth may be that Walter kidnapping Peter may not have been the event that started the Red Universe breakdown.

I watched the Saturday night replay.
That last part of LightPhoenix's spoiler sounds like info gleaned from sources outside the episode, cause I'm not sure what it is referring to, though I've missed a chunk of episodes through this season.
As time travel is involved, I'm betting Peter turns up somewhere, sometime.

Pedantic, I know, but BTW.. it's spelled Olivia. Not Oliva.
Now, back on topic... the last scene was a WTF moment for me. What caused
Peter to become non-existant?

No outside info, just logic (details in spoiler block).
[sblock]At the end of the episode, December/September talk about how people don't remember Peter because he never existed. If Peter never existed, then there's a number of things that (presumably) never happened. The big one is that we've been led to believe that Walter taking Peter from the Red Universe (RU) is what caused the RU to start breaking down. The finale suggests this is incorrect - Peter never existed, so Walter never kidnapped him. After Peter vanishes, Walternate still blames Walter for breaking the RU; this strongly implies that taking Peter was not what caused the RU to break down.
What did cause teh breakdown is unclear: maybe it was the act of Walter crossing over, or the development of the window. Or, perhaps it still happened because the Observers have still observed it (ie quantum determination). Or, perhaps Walternate is wrong and Walter didn't cause it at all. I have a feeling figuring this out will be a central mystery next season.[/sblock]
