Given how literal their non-trilogy movie titles have been ("it stars the Mandalorian and Grogu; any ideas for a title?"), this would be a weird misstep if this ends up being the case.

I think all we really know is that Star Wars: Starfighter is set 5 years after RoS (a good fertile time), is directed by Shawn Levy (who's turned out a decent number of fun action films with heart, such as Free Guy and The Adam Project), and stars Ryan Gosling as a fighter pilot. That's a goodly amount to go with, and I for one am hoping it fulfils the promise of being very watchable.

Indeed, M&G does exactly what it says on the tin. So it’s weird that Starfighter doesn’t seem to have any space battles. It does have lightsabers, but no Sith.

I don’t think we know that at all? Sure, a lightsaber scene has been shot on a pond somewhere, but we don’t know there are no space battles yet.

It’d be funny if the film mirrors the 2001 video game it shares a name with as closely as possible.

“So why are we now in a vintage N-1 Naboo starfighter? It’s nearly a hundred years old, is it safe?”

“Probably not.”

“We’re launching a new IPO offering 4% of our stock to selected investors.”

“That doesn’t sound very evil…”

“We’ve changed the index tracker rules so that Sith shares will be taken up preferentially by pension funds and boost our stock price. We’ll be worth at least two trillion credits after this!”

“Yeah, that sounds more like it.”

I don’t think we know that at all?

In that we we don’t know that the leaks are true, we don’t know, sure.

But as I hear it, the movie opens with precocious young force sensitive teen’s mother being killed by orange-sabre merc Mia Goth, who is working for Matt Smith’s crime lord. Kid flees to his uncle Gosling, a drunken washed up war vet. Cue much tooth-achingly shmaltzy bonding as they flee across the galaxy to deliver the kid to the Ray Skywalker Academy for Wayward Jedi.
