Was it the original EU that suggested Sith used manufactured rather than harvested crystals and that’s why their sabers were red? (I didn’t read much EU beyond the Zahn trilogy and the WEG rpg).

There were several ways Sith could achieve the red crystal in the EU.

• Manufacture a crystal while pouring dark side energy into it.
• Corrupt a crystal, which is where the current bleed is coming from. A dark side user could, again, pour dark side energy into the crystal over a long time to force it to become red.
• Find a natural red khyper crystal that was corrupted by the dark side such as the cave on dagobah or the egg sacs of the spiders on Dantooine.

The flip side is that a light side user can purify a red crystal and that flips it to white. Ahsoka did it with her blades post Order 66.

I think the effect could be opposite - it's not detecting your alignment, but because you wield the force, you interact with the kyber crystal using the force and using the dark side changes that interaction.

Sure, but without the FOrce, a lightsaber is a really expensive plasma torch. Non force users using a lightsaber as a likely to cut themselves in half as win a fight. This has been true forever -- it is why it felt like such a betrayal for Finn to NOT end up being force sensitive.

Unless you actually need to do that in some manner and we just aren't really aware.
If you're a driver or someone that uses a particular tool a lot, you know how it kinda starts feeling like an extension of your body or at least your senses. That probably happens with Jedi (and Sith) wielding a light saber, too, and because they are force sensitive, it means the force also extends from them into the saber and the crystal inside, and does actually affect it. It might be part of the process of enabling Jedi to even deflect blaster bolts.

While it’s never been stated outright that you need the Force to wield a lightsaber, we have at least two counter-examples - Han using it to cut the tauntaun open, and Finn wielding it in a fight.

The latter is more controversial because it’s clear that Finn is Force sensitive but never trains to be a Jedi. Han? Probably not, but he never tries to use it in a fight.

Given the ability of Jedi to affect khyber crystals with the Force and assuming they didn’t choose a very expensive plasma torch as their preferred weapon for no good reason, I think it’s reasonable to argue that you do use the Force to connect to a lightsaber when you wield it in combat. If you don’t have the Force, you can still wave it around but it’s a lot more clumsy.

You’re right. Sabine is Force-sensitive but the others aren’t, necessarily. IIRC it was Sabine wielding the darksaber that alerted Ahsoka that she had Force potential.

The Force connects all living things.

Force sensitivity is a spectrum, not a binary. Sabine, Mando, Omega etc have average-living-thing Force sensitivity, clones are low, and Jedi are selected from the above average.

Yes, of course, but terms like Force-sensitive or high Force potential are used to basically mean “sensitive enough to be worth training as a Jedi… or a Sith”.

Anyone can be trained to some degree, we see that in Rebels, Ahsoka, The Bad Batch and Mando’s Boba Fett episode.

One might almost think the Jedi take children not based on who can be trained, but who might develop abilities without training.
