General star wars talk/discussion/complaining

I still wish Disney+ would do an adaptation of The Star War (the Dark horse comic based on the original script from Lucas) as a limited animated series. That would be super fun.

Attack of the Clones - I love all the scenes on the clone factory on Kamino at the start. Actually my fave of the prequels.

All of this is spot on, except I don't think I have ever heard "Hoth is underappreciated" before. Isn't it often considered one ofthe coolest sequences in the entire OT?
I remember seeing it when I was 10, and being absolutely blown away. As people later remarked about Rogue One, it was very reminiscent of the WWII movies from the sixties and seventies. The hope and courage in the face of an inevitable outcome.
Lucas did, at least early on. In his original canon heirarchy, the movie novelizations were at the highest non-movie level of canon, alongside the radio plays and the early "Art Of" books.
If you ever get the chance, read what Terry Brooks has to say about his experiences being asked to novelise Hook and The Phantom Menace.

With Hook nobody had any clear idea of what they wanted, except that neither the novelisation nor the author (despite being arguably the biggest name in fantasy at the time) deserved any respect. With TPM, he met with George Lucas, was given drafts of the scripts, stills from the movie, technical diagrams of the props, regular feedback, and freedom to write the novel as he wanted. That was a project where he and the final product were valued.

You know what, I'm refusing to allow negativity on May the Fourth. Boo to that. Your task: say something genuinely good about every movie in the franchise. No copouts!:
Can do!

There's too much to say, so I will just mention the first things that come to mind:

A New Hope: the sequence where the Falcon has left the Death Star and Luke and Han are manning the guns - that absolutely rocks, in part because of one of my favorite John Williams pieces ever.
Empire Strikes Back: The Asteroid Field is tied with the scoring for the scene mentioned above. This always felt like the Millenium Falcon's theme to me.
Return of the Jedi: Luke under the scoffolding, being taunted by the Emperor and Vader, in perhaps his darkest moment.
The Phantom Menace: The sound mixing in the pod race is one of the best things I've ever heard in a movie. Also, "Panaka and the Queen's Protectors" is maybe the most Wolfgang Korngold (composer of film scores during Hollywood's golden age) thing John Williams has ever done, and I love it.
Attack of the Clones: When Obi-wan and Anakin are chasing the assassin is the only moment in the PT that feels like the OT to me. I think it's the mix of action and banter.
Revenge of the Sith: The opening battle is pretty fun.
The Force Awakens: The psychic battle between Rey and Kylo is very neatly done, using subtle camera work and sound to sell what's going on.
The Last Jedi: I like all the Luke, Rey, and Kylo stuff in this movie, but especially that despite some bad decisions, Luke has learned so much about the Force that he's past physical confrontation.
The Rise of Skywalker: The chase scene when everybody's on the planet where they find Lando - it's all the new characters, plus the droids and Chewie, and it just feels so much like the OT. Also: Babu Frik!!!
Rogue One: K2SO! I love an annoyed droid.
Solo: Any movie with the MilleniumFalcon in it is cool by me!

Can we also take a moment to appreciate that TFA also introduced to us an entire new species whose names are almost exclusively references to Beastie Boys songs and albums?

I'm partial to Senator Brasmon Kee myself

Say something good about each and every Star Wars film. Umm...okay:

A New Hope: The opening: "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....", followed by the yellow STAR WARS logo receding into space with John William's iconic score kicking in. Best film opening of all time.
Empire Strikes Back: Two of my favorite things: Han and Leia's romantic banter harkening back to the Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. Plus the fantastic carbon freezing chamber set in its smoky industrial blues and oranges.
Return of the Jedi: The Luke, Vade, Emperor finale. While this entry is the weakest of the original trilogy, it absolutely nails this scene.
The Phantom Menace: The whole of the pod race. I particularly like the intro visual with the 3PO and the others carrying the banners in the wide shot. Adds an immediate epic scope.
Attack of the Clones: The Geonosian arena section with the monsters is fun, classic pulp sci-fi. Very Flash Gordon.
Revenge of the Sith: Gives up glimpses of more planets than ever before. Fun to finally see Kashyyyk.
The Clone Wars: Introduces us to Ahsoka Tano, a surprisingly good and lasting addition to the Star Wars family.
The Force Awakens: That swoopy shot of the Falcon as its being chased after taking off from Jakku. You know the one.
The Last Jedi: The first movie to attempt to interrogate the necessity, strengths and failures of the Jedi. Mark Hamill is phenomenal.
Rogue One: Donnie Yen is in it!
The Rise of Skywalker: The Anzellians obviously.
Solo: The shot of the looming Star Destroyer appearing during the Kessel Run is pretty cool.

The duel at the end was one of the best things about it, IMO. It subverted expectations while at the same time being one of the most powerful uses of the force that we'd seen to that point.
Different strokes. I thought it was a cop out.

In general, Luke's character in the sequel trilogy was a mess, and not in a cool "complicated" way.

I think my favorite thing from the whole prequel trilogy, though, was when Ben was fighting Rey and he punched himself in the wound to amp himself up for the fight that he should have just won without breaking a sweat. TFA is easily the best of the trilogy and its promise was never fulfilled.

The fact that a fan edit of the final fight of the trilogy is worlds better than the one we got says it all.
