The whole sequel trilogy should have been new and different. The “decades long series” was finished, trying to endlessly remake the same story is a sure fire sign of franchise death.

Kinda. It is part 7,8,9 and uses the OT actors.

Probably should have recycled so e things from EU vs recycle ANH again.

Eg new republic survives, Luke's Jedi order, Leia and han togather. Basic foundation.

Probably more than 1 Skywalker descendant if you're gonna kill one off.

I am excited to dive into the Darth Maul series. It sounds like they really nailed it.

They did. Best episodes are rated above ESB.

Its better than S1 of Rebels and Clone Wars. Not hard with Clone Wars tbf.

Exactly... that's what I meant Duel of the Directors. It's pretty obvious that Rey was supposed to be someone. Then Rian decided... nah. Than JJ said, yeah. And that push and pull killed any cohesion in the whole thing, IMO.

Trying to do something new and different in the penultimate film in a decades long series is not, IMO, a virtue.

"The Force Awakens" was very much "Star Wars Greatest Hits", and that's fine - after the prequels, and especially after the Disney acquisition, that's probably exactly what it had to be. But just carrying on with a remake of ESB wouldn't have worked, IMO. They basically had to subvert at least some of that setup.

I don't think it worked. But I'll give them at least some credit for trying.

But I agree absolutely with some of the other points made in this thread: the real failing was starting a trilogy without a clear notion of how the overall story should go. Whether it was Lucas, Filoni, JJA, or whoever else, they really needed someone working it out from the outset. As it is, now they're paying the price for their lack of vision.
