The Force Awakens was very much JJ Abrams has never had an original idea in his life.

Seen it all before, but done better and with heart, was not fine.

Well yeah.

They could have recovered still. JJ did set up some interesting thing.

TLJ burnt to many things down and painted them into a corner. No effective villain left, no time to develop a new one.

JJ likes to set things up without having any idea what they mean or where they are going to lead. See Lost, which was made up as it went along based on audience suggestions.

The way to do it that produces good results is to know where you are going in Episode 9. Then you set it up in Episode 7.

TLJ tried to course-correct by looking for an interesting story rather than telling the same one over and over again. It didn’t work because the developments were not set up in Episode 7 or followed through in episode 9.

NB Snoke was never an interesting character, killing him off was the best thing you could do with him.

No, it’s the Disney execs who are at fault.

But you don’t hire JJ if you want a coherent story, you hire him if you want VFX and plot threads that go nowhere. He is Uwe Boll with a bigger budget.

Rian wasn’t a good hire for this franchise either, but again, that’s the fault of the studio executives for hiring the wrong directors.

But in the process killed any chance 8 and 9 had. Which in the long run killed the franchise.

When you are running a franchise, it's not the current film that matters, its the next one, and the one after that.

There's also very poor worldbuilding across the trilogy. No real sense of the relative strengths of the First Order and the Republic, or how the balance of power shifts across the movies. I couldn't imagine setting an RPG campaign in this era as I could within the eras covered between the other two trilogies, I wouldn't have a clue what the stakes were or where to place anything.

I dont think TFA was fatal as such to the flaws of the ST.

There's poor worldbuilding because JJ doesn't care about worldbuilding, only spectacle and drama. Any good worldbuilding in a JJ work is in spite of him.

I don't even know how you say that from what JJ did. I mean, you could also say the Emperor wasn't an interesting character from what was done with him in ANH.
