How long has it been since a game was playable off the disk?

Playable off the disc is less my particular concern (that’s been a long time) versus the ability to have the game disc and load it on my system when I want. Games come and go from online stores often, and the cost of access and storage is only going up.

On the upside with all the data centers getting built, cloud gaming will finally come into its own. Then you will be able to play GTA 6 on a potato.

I've been primarily a PC gamer for quite a while now, so I'm no stranger to having to download games. I figured this was coming for a while but it's weird to see it come out officially like this. I kind of figured game companies would just continue making fewer and fewer games available on physical media until they just quietly disappeared.

I had an Xbox One S for a brief while, that I bought when Red Dead Redemption 2 came out. BestBuy had a pretty good sale on it, and I figured it could also double as an HD Blu-Ray player. I only ever purchased three games for it. RDR2, The Outerworlds, and then one of the newer Assassin's Creed titles. I was staying with my parents, who live out in the middle of nowhere, with only mobile internet/hotspotting available, and I go to play Assassin's Creed, only to discover it won't run just off the disc. I had to have an internet connection, and download a massive patch in order to play the game.

I ended up just selling the console after that.

This computer hardware squeeze is a real drag too.. Because my GPU is starting to show it's age. I couldn't run Forza Horizon 6, and I know there's no world in which my PC will run GTA6, if it ever makes it to PC... My GF had mentioned maybe wanting to get a PS5 for a couple of games she was interested in, and I humored the idea, mostly for the GTA6 thing.. But I'm now more turned off of consoles than ever as of late.

I've been getting my games via download exclusively for years now. And I make sure, one way or another, to have offline backups of the installers. Yes, I don't play certain types of games nor buy them from certain places.

I did not. It's admittedly on me. I'd been disconnected from console gaming for a while at that point. I figured there was a possibility that I may have missed out on some day-1 bug fixing patches or something, but I thought I'd at least be able to play a game.

Well, this is just giving me massive amounts of ick this morning. I’ve downloaded games before but I still prioritize actually buying the discs and will keep doing so as long as I can.

I've got a mix of physical and digital purchases for my PlayStation, but I see little good coming from moving to solely digital releases. This will do serious damage to the second-hand market.

This. The secondhand market place has barely been holding on for years. It will be a digital marketplace going forward.
