This computer hardware squeeze is a real drag too.. Because my GPU is starting to show it's age. I couldn't run Forza Horizon 6, and I know there's no world in which my PC will run GTA6, if it ever makes it to PC... My GF had mentioned maybe wanting to get a PS5 for a couple of games she was interested in, and I humored the idea, mostly for the GTA6 thing.. But I'm now more turned off of consoles than ever as of late.

I just gave my buddy my PS4 and games because I cant remember the last time I even turned it on. Never stepped up to PS5. Looks like im just a PC gamer. I dont even play anything that fancy anymore most of my stuff is retro.

This. The secondhand market place has barely been holding on for years. It will be a digital marketplace going forward.

Not too long ago I bought Star Wars Outlaw for PS5 used at Gamestop. Probably the first used game I had bought in ages, not least because I mostly play PC games.

I've been primarily a PC gamer for quite a while now, so I'm no stranger to having to download games. I figured this was coming for a while but it's weird to see it come out officially like this. I kind of figured game companies would just continue making fewer and fewer games available on physical media until they just quietly disappeared.

I had an Xbox One S for a brief while, that I bought when Red Dead Redemption 2 came out. BestBuy had a pretty good sale on it, and I figured it could also double as an HD Blu-Ray player. I only ever purchased three games for it. RDR2, The Outerworlds, and then one of the newer Assassin's Creed titles. I was staying with my parents, who live out in the middle of nowhere, with only mobile internet/hotspotting available, and I go to play Assassin's Creed, only to discover it won't run just off the disc. I had to have an internet connection, and download a massive patch in order to play the game.

I ended up just selling the console after that.

I haven't owned a disk based console since the PS1. And going through the pain of buying overpriced older games for it has soured me on collecting physical games. Now basically everything commands a premium, even shovelware. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for preservation, but the current premium collector market for older games media is broken.

My console trajectory started with the SAD, then went for a Series S for future proofing, yet all I've gotten out of it was nicer visuals in Minecraft. Now that I have a kinda nice desktop, I find it very much superfluous. The SAD plays all of the games I own on xbox, plus any games as a service I could want that aren't in Linux due to anticheat, and recently I've been moving more and more into my Steam and GoG libraries. It doesn't help its case that I mostly played games through Gamepass and anyhting interesting is now on my Steam or GoG libraries or wishlisted.

Right now I'm considering getting rid of the Series S considering it'll be the cheapest way of playing GTA6 and I'm not really interested, so perhaps its true home lies somewhere else.

Outisde of Palworld, BG3 and Jedi Survivor most of my games are older titles too.

I can imagine games in the secondhand market becoming awfully expensive as games become rarer and when places like GameStop inevitably shutdown. Walmart and BestBuy have long since stopped having their bargain bins. But I can envision people still seeking out these games.

I can totally see XBox following suit, but I bet Nintendo holds on to proprietary physical media forever.

I can imagine games in the secondhand market becoming awfully expensive as games become rarer and when places like GameStop inevitably shutdown. Walmart and BestBuy have long since stopped having their bargain bins. But I can envision people still seeking out these games.

It was a big deal at the start of the year,but as far as walmart goes, they have cut back on how many xbox games they have. It's like one or two rows in the case. I'll have to take a pic next time i'm there to show what i mean.

"Given the concerns about physical media, we announce that Project Helix will launch with a disc drive and all first party titles will launch as physical releases with a disc. Also we are going to relaunch Gold edition versions of all of our first party games from the OG and 360 era as standalone discs, as well as any from the One era that can fit inside a disc. We restate Xbox compromise with preservation of games through our Backward compatibility program. In fact, we are going to expand it even further"

There, easy win. But of course I don't expect them to take it. Like they say in my home country "Le tienen miedo al exito."

6 months later... because physical media cost so much to produce, MS has decided the Xbox has been discontinued.
