Kaja Foglio reports that the occasionally spotty periodical comic Girl Genius will be moving to a thrice-weekly webcomic format starting April 18th.

It seems to me that if they actually manage to update with three pages a week, we'll actually get more of the comic than we currently get in print, which might be nice.

DAMM! DAMM! DAMM! I hope this means they haven't been loosing money on it. I've loved pretty much everything he's done. I'll have to go over there and buy some stuff from their website.

She doesn't mention losing money, but that it will cut some overhead. She also notes:

Plus, I have to say, periodical comics serve two functions; one as a frequent reminder that we exist—sort of a placeholder; and two as a cheap entry point for new readers experimenting to see if they want to commit to the series. The Girl Genius comics, at the higher end of the price scale and on a quarterly release schedule, didn’t really do this as well as a more frequent Web presence will.

I have a bit of insider information that they may well put up an RSS feed for the comic. I expect that any fan interested in the series is going to read the thing online, but will purchase compilations when they come out, too.

I got copies of Girl Genius whenever I saw it in stores, but it'll be nice to add to my webcomics list. Can't wait to see how it goes.

I dropped Girl Genius several years ago, as there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the schedule. First Bi-monthly, then quarterly, then whenever-we-manage-to-get-an-issue-out. If they can't even manage to get an issue out every 3 months, how often is the web comic actually going to be updated? They may start off with 3 pages a week, but I'd be surprised if that lasts very long...
