Being an old guy I really prefer "D" for dragons or "S" for satyr. Finding them in the current MM is a pain in the ass and feels like an affront to proper alphabetization. It also means you can't have useful species type subsections. But I'm an old guy so who knows, maybe this is fine.
There's really no way to do this without causing problems: the problem in the 2014 Monster Manual was precisely those "type" subsections: like 40% of the book was in D.

Why would that matter?

If two monster types begin with D, then you sort them by the second letter and so on. Demon, Devil, Dragon… it’s extremely simple and the first letter distribution skew has no importance whatsoever 🤔

One of the Dungeon Tubers (apologies for forgetting which one) mentioned some of Arthas stats and I have to say I was a bit shocked his Armor Class was only 20....maybe his Armour is only for decoration.
Maybe the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne require a bunch of attunement slots. (Frostmourne should probably be an artifact, if they're doing that in this book.)

not sure why how many monsters are under what letter is relevant. I do not even care if you go by Dragon, Green or Green Dragon, but be consistent. You did not do that eg for Slaad and pretty much anything but dragons. That is not an improvement, it’s just a new set of exceptions to get used to

I'm with you! I normally search monsters using DDB, but I have a physical copy of the MM because it's gorgeous, and the first time I flipped through it, I was like, "The hell is this?" Very confusing. I recognize there's no perfect system, but the 2024 version is the least ideal, for me.

Yea im not sure what the "correct" way to order things is i.e. the textbook way.

That being said I have always done it sorted by creature type. Then ordered alphabetically, for creatures under a sub heading I put the subheading alphabetically in the main list then each creature within under its own subheading, so you can go to e for elf for all the elves or t for true dragons for those.

Maybe its wrong but its worked pretty well for me.

The big issue they found for discoverability among newer players using the MM as a cross reference to published works was not knowing where the find all the Fiends: now they are all clear in the Table of Contents without having to know if they are a Devil, a Demon, or a Yuggoloth.

Devils and Demons were the big problem this approach solved, actually.

I was unsure about it at first, but honestly in practice it makes just as much sense as the 2024 MM, probably more, and way better indexed.
