There's far too much material to be given decent play in these four hours, and big, suspenseful chunks from the source material are left out, including a wonderful dragon fight and a deadly encounter with a sorceress.
The central characters played by Ashmore and Kreuk are not given their due because their personal transformations aren't fully dealt with. Ashmore is just about as reckless and flippant at the end as he is at the beginning, and Kreuk is provided only a one-note role to play with. Rossellini and Glover inject welcome dignity into the proceedings.
Because two complex story lines from two novels are shoehorned together, there's a climax in "Legend" that's much too involved. Ashmore as Ged faces a ruthless king who wants him dead, a creature that haunts him, suspicious priestesses and a horde of deadly demons. And, oh yes, he has to deliver world peace as well.
