House ruling Savage Species

(how) will you change the 'no character classes until monster classes are full' rule?

  • I won't, it works for me.

  • I will have monster classes level up at in game intervals with character classes in the meantime.

  • I will have different rules for more 'biological' monsters vs outsiders and elemental types.

  • I'll just let my characters mix and match them as they choose - I trust them not to powergame it.

The 'no mixing monster classes and character classes" rule from SS seems to be a bit contentious on the main board. Are people who want to use this book planning on changing it, and if so, how?

I don't like the heavyhandedness of the SS rule (oy, that sounds worse than it is...)

I'd probably house-rule that you need two 'race' levels for each standard class level, but it may differ for certain types of creatures.

I'm going to eyeball each monster and say "you need to finish all your monster levels by X level." As a rule of thumb I'll have X=monster levels + 2.

I do have a special case that I'll be instituting ASAP. I have a player with a monk of Kossuth (FR fire god). I'll be applying strange and dark magics to morph him into a flamebrother salamander, so he'll have 6 monk levels before he even starts taking salamander levels.

PS

I doubt it'll ever come up IMC, but if it does, I'd permit mixing monster classes and character classes, but with the restriction that total character class level can't outnumber monster class level.
