It sounds like you have a great start right there - it's good to see players take some initiative. It sounds like the DM has things he needs to do as well, particularly if he is going to make a point of calling you out for lacking in the RP arena. Some random ideas/thoughts (in no particular order)... RP Outside of the Game One thing you might try as well is, once you bring this all to your DM, is talk to him/her about light RP outside of the game. I'm not sure if you guys all have/use IM, or email etc, but it might be nice if, between games, you can cover some of the stuff specific to your characters. For example, IM-ing the DM and letting him/her know what you want to accomplish. For example - "Hey, can my character take inventory of what tools/weapons are available? I don't need specifics, but I'm curious if I have enough stuff available to bring in more recruits, or if I should be buying some supplies first" etc. If you all can get little bits done in between games, it get things more established in preparation for the next game. Plus the DM has an idea of what he/she should be prepared with at that next game. Rogue Waitress? Excellent Inside Information The Rogue could not only get information about a theives guild, but could be tasked with keeping her ear out for specific information. She could tell the DM, "I want to pay close attention to anything involving the barracks, or people looking for training or help in general. Also, any rumors about dark magic in the area - something our Warlock could investigate". This kind of prompt gives the DM an easy way to include bits for everyone, all through the skill and hard work of the Rogue who gets to contribute to the group as a whole. Get Those Backgrounds Rolling Your DM will definately know more about you (something he/she was wanting) based on backgrounds. You said you were working on those, and that's good. I would suggest not only mentioning contacts that are approachable, but also any enemies, or people disliked/distrusted by you. This can often times be more helpful to a DM than "I have all these friends named X, Y, Z" etc. Friendly contacts are good, but not-so-friendly ones are awesome! Consider complicating the background as well - it should not be clean and happy all the time. That doesn't mean it has to be "my parents were killed in the war", but things such as growing up poor, or perhaps you have a family member in jail for something bad and as such your name has been tarnished in town, etc. I think a lot of times, backgrounds tend to only cover the past and don't really touch the present. Your character "did this, saw that, responded this way, and that is why I am in this town now" etc. Often times, my backgrounds don't really go into stuff that happened more than a year ago (and this example may not work perfectly in your current situation). I like to fill that in as I go, or as I am questioned about it etc. I like to learn those things about my character on the fly rather than have to check my sheet and remember.
