How do you organize your RPGs books?

1. By alphabetical order.
2. By alphabetical publishing company.
3. By alphabetical order using genre categories.
4. By Games system: 1d20, d6s pool, etc.
5. Other system
6. I don't, it's a complete disorganized mess.

I used to be #1 but yesterday, I went with #3: Alphabetical generic systems, then alphabetical fantasy, alphabetical pulp & modern, finally alphabetical post-apocalyptic & science fiction.

5. Priority

First order: usage --- the games I am playing get on the top shelves.

Second order: utility --- core books first (leftmost), then GM supplements (bestiaries, etc.), then player supplements, then genre/setting books, then adventures, then other miscellany, also with some "how often I use them"-ness applied.

By game and edition, but Ive long run out of shelf space as my bookshelves could use an upgrade; and I could use 1 or 2 more.

Before the purge I used to have a shelf for each edition with 'official' on one side and 3PP on the other. The bottom shelf was for non-D&D that I collected over time. Now I have a basement shelf with some of the old stuff I did not let go sitting in a pile or still in a box. It is mostly old campaign notes and some old Forgotten Realms things that I really do not need. My books that I use are on the shelf in the same pile or on the table next to it, but mostly in the travelling bag with the rest of the stuff like dice and notes.

Indie shelf organized by system. D&D shelf by edition. Licensed game shelf by system. Older game shelf by system.

Mostly by Game/Edition. Although the PF1 pocket edition books are on a shorter height wise shelf. Rest of that shelf is similar sized board/card games. Full height PF1 stuff mixed in with later PF2 books. A fair amount of "where it fits best to maximize space usage".

D&D and Fallout 2d20 are the only systems that I have enough books to need a sort system. All other systems are just kept together, their internal order simply as put together.

Fallout 2d20 books are on my desk as I am running a Fallout game. Core followed by sourcebooks followed by campaign. It's just 6 books.

D&D 5e takes up 2 shelves. Shelf 1 starts with the slipcase sets: 2014 PHB/MM/DMG, MOTM/XGTE/TCOE, Planescape, and Spelljammer. Rest of Shelf 1 are remaining sourcebooks sorted by release order, with 2024 books at the end. I don't have much space left on shelf 1, but I'm only missing the new Ravenloft.

Shelf 2 has the adventure books sorted in release order. I have much more space to expand here, so at the end I have the 6 box sets stacked, which perfectly fit.

Once I need a third shelf, I'll move all the 2024 books to it.

Some people order them by color, as they feel it's clearly the easiest and most effective way to organize books by far.
