It is. I have played a couple of times, and I love the books.Give it a try! It's pretty easy, and really fun.
That IS a good question. I'll put it this way: I have no great desire to play DCC outside of the Lankhmar setting. DCC isn't bad, and I like its simplicity. But I sorely miss the lack of a real Skill system. While the setting is a HUGE draw, I do like some mechanical stuff, but it's notably mostly the stuff that diverges from DCC proper. Benisons and Dooms, Fleeting Luck, Spell Stipulations, etc. Here's a good question. How much of the fun because it was Lahnkmar (which kicks ass) and how much of that was the system itself?
I would kill for a huge Quarmall box set...Given that we have two licensed Elric games coming soon, I wouldn't bet against Lankhmar having a new home in the near future. I'd prefer it to be systemless, so it could work with any system, but I suspect it'll end up tied to an existing system in the way Goodman tied it to DCC.
That feels improbable. That would be a big costly product for a deep cut in a franchise that is decades past its prime. (I love Lankhmar, but 99% of its fans have to get regular colonoscopies.)I would kill for a huge Quarmall box set...
That's so interesting. I personally hate skill systems. I'd rather just use attribute checks with narration, i.e. "you tell me how you are going to do this, " or role-play it vs. rolling it. DCC brought me the Lankhmar game I always wanted, but never got. And for that I am grateful. But to me DCC has many of the strengths and weaknesses prevalent in many OSR games.
DCC as written does allow IIRC for a bonus of some sort on non-combat activities that can be toed to a character's background. This works well enough (especially in a setting as fleshed out as Lankhmar) that I'm probably not missing the Skill system all that much. But I do prefer a game to offer adjudication for things outside of combat. That's so interesting. I personally hate skill systems.
