How to get new rituals?

Other than buying/finding them, is there any way to obtain rituals?

I ask because my DM has basically told me flat out that I won't have any opportunity to acquire them any time soon. I found this odd, considering a level 1 ritual costs 50g and (I assume) would be fairly common.

Unfortunately, if the DM doesn't want you to have them, I doubt you'll have them. I'd petition for their use though, they make a cool addition to the game. Some characters weaknesses are offset by their inclusion, and to not have them available kills some equality.

In situations like these I default to an old gaming rule: When in doubt bribe the DM with beer :)

So, if your DM doesn't want you to have access to rituals, why not ask if you can replace Ritual Caster feat with something else appropriate to his/her vision of your PC's class? Or pick a version of your class (if available) that doesn't get Ritual Casting and makes up for it in other class features?

Yeah, I figured as much. I debated on changing my Ritual Caster Feat to the multiclass one that allows you to start with 2 or 3, but I don't think I could justify it in-game.

Have you asked the DM why he fells that way? It might be some kind of misunderstanding that you can work out.

I'm also curious why you can justify being a ritual caster, but cannot justify the feat that lets you gain the free rituals.

If those fail, it sounds like it probably best to ditch the rituals.

When I first made the PC, I didn't have access to the character builder, only the core books. So I took the Ritual Caster feat.

I wasn't aware of the multi-classing feats that allowed you to get rituals.

I mentioned to the DM that I was looking to buy one and he said the town we're going to wouldn't have them. He also added that he's a relatively new DM and doesn't understand rituals.

If it's a little fishing village, or a place that hates and fears wizards, I could see there not being any rituals there. But the bigger issue is the DM doesn't understand them. Talk with him, point out how easy they are to use. You pay the material cost to cast it, you take the listed casting time, you roll your skill check. Done.

You know this is a sad issue. The actual ritual mechanic has a few issues, but they can add so much flavor to the game. Unfortunately they have pretty much been relegated to a dark corner on the PHB with very little anchoring to the game or the campaign.

It is sad because if the books did a better job of "using" this mechanic, and presenting it to the DM, there would be so much more to really like about the game.

I agree. And if the DM is using mostly Essentials (which is quite possible since he is brand new), he has no exposure to them at all...
