Human stand-ins from the MM

The human section is just too darn short in the MM.

I'm trying to create interesting NPC's with neat powers that fit various niches and I'm finding I have to pick from other races to do so. I rejig them a bit to make the powers fit a little better, but otherwise they're the same monster.

For instance, I rejigged a goblin blackblade to be my local (human) thieves guild lurkers, and the kobold dragonshield to be the (human) thugs that back them up.

So I was hoping to hear from people what other races they use and why for their human stand-ins in order to give me more ideas for my human-centric campaign.

I'm struggling with this as well. I wanted to have some 0-level (but not minion) NPCs to represent the various townspeople the PCs run into. The thought was to actually let the players play the townspeople, holding off the zombie horde until the PC cavalry rode in to save the day.

It was a lot more trouble than I thought, and I'm still not happy with the result. I don't have the data here with me, but I'll try to post a few later.

I use "Monster" stats for other humans. Humanoid stats for Goblins and Orcs work very well, as do Kobolds and the like. It only takes a slight bit of change (language, alignment) to use these as human foes.
