D&D 3E/3.5 I love 3E. I love 4E. I'm mad!

Wisdom Penalty

First Post
Nietzsche said madness in individuals was rare; in mobs it is the rule.

So am I mad because I love both 3E and (what I'm hearing about) 4E. I don't understand, truly, why these two subjects have to be mutually exclusive. And if you say "They don't have to be" then I ask - "Why are they?" At least, on these boards, they seem to be.

I'll admit I lean more toward the 4E camp only because the incessant negativity from anti-4E people rubs me the wrong way. I guess that's not fair; being anti-something makes it, by definition, negative. 4E is also appealing because to me because it's fun to take the more challenging side of being "for" something than simply being "against" it.

So, personally, that's why I find myself leaning in one camp or another. That's why I get exasperated by the same threadcraps and what-not.

But I stepped back today and took a long look at myself...and I was disappointed I put on weight. But, besides that, I took a long look at myself and I realized - "3E's a great damned game." That's not saying we don't need or want a 4E, it's just saying that 3E brought me - and a whole lot of old guys like myself - back into D&D after we were out for some time.

Anyone else out there both: (a) really, really like 3E, and (b) really, really look forward to 4E?

Perhaps it is madness.

If that's madness, consider me mad. There are many great things about 3E, things that 4E may never be able to replicate, or at the very least will take a long time to develop to that point. At this point it looks like my future holds a 3.5 game and a 4E game - one of my groups doesn't want to switch. And they'll both be very cool enjoyable.

Yeah, some people enjoy 3e enough to stick with it.

But like 4e enough to cannibalize some of the more clever rules.

I think I'm leanding toward 4e, but I might have to put back in things that it looses in a few areas where my needs, I guess, are diffrent than the majority of gamers. Which is sad, but nothing I didn't have to do for 3e. And, hey, more interesting battles!

you do have a Wisdom Penalty ;)

No seriously people have been treating the topic like you have to be in one camp and not the other. That's BS. You can enjoy both. For me 3.x got me back into Roleplay after a long hiatus. Roleplaying is now my main hobby again.

Unfortunetly 3.X's flaws grew more and more irritatiing for me until I refused to play (3.X)anymore. I'm hoping 4e doesn't have the same flaws (It'll have flaws for sure...hoping they don't kill the game for me)

But no on that topic I think you're okay.....others areas? Well I don't know you enough ;)

I'm looking forward to 4e and I love AD&D... I'm currently running B2 and I plan to run H1 (the 4th edition module) as soon as possible.

3.5 is, in my imo, the best rpg ever published. I think 4e will be significantly better than 3.5.

On the two camps: Well, that's the internet for you. It makes enemies of people who'd likely be friends (or at least get along) if they met in real life.

I'm definitely 4e-xcited.

But I was looking through my 3e Players the other day and I thought just the same thing: "this is still a great game".

I'm sure we can all embrace these two views and have a positive dialogue about it... just not on the Internet. :D

I, also, enjoy 3.5. It's a great game. But that doesn't mean I don't have to spend the time to houserule things that I see as problems. There's a lot that can be done to make it a better game.

4e claims to address almost every issue I have with 3.5, while still being D&D. For that reason, I look forward to 4e. This will not stop me from playing in 3.5 games if so invited to, as I still enjoy it.

I find more of the problems I have of 3.5 to be as a DM, not as a player. As a DM, I look forward to all the tools that 4e has to assist me cut down my prep time, and maximize my creative compelling story creation time. In addition, I find it significantly difficult to have 3.5 combat be challenging and fun when the overall power disparity between players is a significant gap. As a player I can make sure my character will be efficient and contribute to the party no matter what my role is, but I can't get everyone else to do the same.

These are only a few reasons that I enjoy 3.5, and look forward to 4e. In fact, I don't know of that many people who can say they didn't enjoy 3.x, but look forward to 4e, as I find most people who look forward to 4e are not haters of D&D, but rather people who enjoy the game and see that 4e has the potential to have that fun with a lot less disparity mixed in with it.
