(IC) PLANESCAPE: Intrigue

Grim patiently keeps her eyes on the street for any possible threat, and one ear trying to capture what is going on with the conversation above...

Above them, the stairway climbed narrowly between cracked plaster walls before turning sharply onto the next floor.

The light of Sky's flame revealed what the collapse had left behind.

The upper chamber had once been considerably larger. Part of its outer wall and floor had fallen into the street, leaving the surviving half exposed to cold air through a jagged opening. Two long tables remained against the interior wall. Most of the glassware upon them had broken, but iron clamps, stained cloth, shallow metal trays, and several intact stoppered bottles remained among the debris.

The black residue seen from the street was more extensive here.

It had dried in thin streaks across one tabletop and down the side of a cabinet. Elsewhere, dark stains marked the floor around the legs of a heavy chair fitted with leather restraints. The chair itself had been pulled partly away from the table before the collapse.

A small shrine occupied a recessed niche in the far wall. Purple cloth hung there beneath three amber drops fashioned from glass. Whatever offerings had once rested beneath them had been hastily disturbed; one bowl lay overturned and several darkened candles had fallen onto their sides.

Nearer the collapsed portion of the room, several sheets of parchment had been trapped beneath a fallen wooden case. Others had escaped it entirely and now lay scattered among broken glass and splintered boards.

Nothing in the visible portion of the chamber moved.

The bell from the Keep sounded again beyond the broken wall.

Downstairs, Severin remained beside the timber, waiting for Orris to begin.

Upstairs, the surviving laboratory offered several places Sky could investigate more closely: the restrained chair and black staining, the bottles and equipment, the shrine, or the scattered papers. The damaged floor near the open wall could also be examined, though approaching that portion of the room would mean trusting what remained of the structure.
Sky considers the problem. He is not so much interested in the chemistry set. He doesn't have the knowledge to understand it. The papers look more promising. The question is how to get them safely.

<<Mage Hand.>>

"Yes. Thank you for your assistance. Not really helping," Sky mutters.

<<A monkey perhaps? They are small, good at climbing and have opposable thumbs. Handy for picking up loose objects.>>

...

<<Surely you have seen a monkey before? Like, at a festival or something? No? Ok.>>

Sky casts his first spell, then his second. Holding the thought, Sky breath in and exhales deeply, spreading a cone of freezing air across the floor between himself and the chest and loose papers. Then, moving carefully, Sky proceeds to move across the gap between himself and chest, picking the route that is least contaminated.

<<Well, not your worst plan ...>>

"Shush."

Cast Protection from Poison. Not sure if will help, but worth a shot.
Cast Guidance.
Breath Weapon - Cone of Cold. Hopefully it will neutralise the black stuff, if only temporarily.
Athletics (+3) Acrobatics (+2) or just Dex (+2) with Guidance (+1d4). If applicable. Not exactly sure what constitutes an "ability check".

If Sky is able to get to the chest he will gather any loose papers within reach, put them in the chest and retreat back to the stairs.

Downstairs, the timber settled back into its previous position under Severin's control. Mara remained pinned beneath it, the black tracery exposed along her leg now impossible to mistake.

Near the entrance, the street remained quiet beneath Grim's watch. The bell continued its slow toll from deeper in Plague-Mort, but nothing had yet appeared in the adjoining streets.

Upstairs, the freezing blast swept across the ruined laboratory.

White frost raced over broken boards, shattered glass, overturned furniture and the dark residue staining the floor. The oily sheen vanished beneath a skin of ice. Thinner streaks stiffened and cracked as the wood contracted beneath them.

For several seconds, nothing changed.

Then one of the frozen streaks split.

Black fluid remained beneath it.

It had not frozen with the water and grime around it. Instead, a tiny bead of black welled slowly into the crack in the frost and stopped there, glossy against the white.

The cold had accomplished something useful nonetheless. The residue was no longer slick beneath the ice, and its extent was much easier to see. What had appeared to be scattered contamination from below resolved into several distinct trails. Some ended at shattered containers. Others surrounded the restrained chair. One disappeared beneath a cabinet. Several dark stains had penetrated cracks between the floorboards deeply enough that frost could not conceal them.

The safest route toward the fallen case was now much clearer.

The floor itself remained the greater danger. Several boards between the stairs and the papers still rested on intact supports, while others bowed toward the portion of the building that had collapsed into the street.

Orris's examination of the surviving equipment revealed more than the wreckage had from below.

The bottles were not a collection of ingredients. They were samples.

Some contained scraps of stained cloth. Others held small quantities of black residue suspended in clear fluid, fragments of tissue, or dark sediment gathered at the bottom. Most had been labeled by hand. Dates appeared repeatedly, accompanied by terse descriptions.

Recovered from cellar wall. No living source present.

Subject symptomatic before collection.

Heat: no lasting change.

After prayer: unchanged.

Separated 6 hours: active.

Another label had been amended in a different hand.

Do not assume inactivity from separation.

Nearby sat a wooden rack designed to hold narrow glass ampoules. Most of its slots were empty. Two surviving ampoules were shaped differently from the larger specimen bottles, narrow enough to fit inside something else rather than serve as ordinary storage.

The resemblance to the glass payload recovered from the Talonite crossbow bolt was difficult to miss.

Whatever else Mara had lied about or omitted, the laboratory supported at least part of her account. The people working here had been collecting the black substance from elsewhere, subjecting it to different treatments, recording the results, and eventually preparing small quantities for another purpose.

There was another detail.

The labels did not agree on what the substance was.

Contagion.

Venom?

Curse residue.

One had simply been crossed out and replaced with:

Unknown.

From below came Mara's voice.

"If you're looking for something that tells you how to cure it, save yourself the disappointment."

A short silence followed.

"We never found one."

Severin's reply carried from below.

"Your research methods appear to have progressed considerably further in the opposite direction."

Mara did not answer.

The papers near the fallen case promised more. Several were loose enough for portions of their writing to be visible from where they lay. Tables, dates, locations, abbreviated observations. One sheet appeared to contain a list of names. Another bore several lines of cramped writing beneath a heading that remained obscured by the case.

One page, caught half beneath a broken board, showed a phrase clearly enough to read:

...earliest verified exposure predates our arrival...

The remainder disappeared beneath the timber.

The bell sounded again beyond the shattered wall.

The cold had bought Sky a cleaner route and revealed where much of the contamination lay, but it had not made the damaged floor sound. The papers could be reached. The question was whether the surviving boards would bear the crossing.

Sky's cold breath had a real effect. It froze the surrounding moisture and surface contamination enough to make the safer route much easier to identify, but the black substance itself does not appear to freeze normally. Protection from Poison remains active.

@doghead: give me Acrobatics +2 plus Guidance 1d4 for the damaged floor. Because of Sky's precautions and the route he identified, this is a relatively modest check rather than a blind crossing through the contaminated area. On a success, Sky can gather the reachable papers into the case and return without another roll.

@TaranTheWanderer: Orris's examination is enough to establish that these are primarily collected samples and experimental materials, not ingredients for manufacturing the plague. He also finds equipment consistent with loading small quantities into the sort of bolt the party encountered. A more focused examination is possible if Orris wants to pursue any particular part of the lab.

Orris looks at the various bottles and selects one to inspect. One, unusual one, caught his eye and he leaned closer to look at it. As Sky was attempting to traverse the precarious boards, Orris picked up the the bottle. He cleaned it to get a better look at the contents.

"Hmmm..."

He brought it downstairs and leaned over Mara. He dangled the bottle in front of her - a clear liquid sloshed inside,

"What's this? I found it under the desk. It doesn't seem to belong."

The boards complained under the added weight, but held.

Once the loose records were together and away from the ruined edge, their organization became clearer. The papers beneath the fallen case belonged to an earlier stage of the Talonites' work, before the room had become primarily a place for testing samples.

The half-buried line continued:

...earliest verified exposure predates our arrival by at least six days. Initial source remains unconfirmed.

Several reports followed, attempts to reconstruct those first days from witnesses who rarely agreed. One placed the first afflicted near the outer markets. Another insisted the sickness had already appeared closer to the Keep. A third described a corpse bearing the markings before either account. Someone had repeatedly circled the contradictions and written beside them:

Stop looking for the first patient. Find the first reliable witness.

A later page contained a short list of those witnesses. Most had been crossed out: dead, missing, or simply unreliable.

One had not.

Edrin Vale. Cooper. Survived initial outbreak. Taken to sanctuary.

Beneath it, in newer handwriting:

Halfling asking after Vale. Would not give affiliation.

There was enough here to establish something the laboratory itself could not. The Talonites had arrived to find the affliction already underway, and someone matching Alton's description had been tracing the same confused beginnings. If he had followed the surviving witness, the sanctuary was now more than a place to find the Plague Doctor.

Below, Mara's attention remained fixed on the vial.

"That shouldn't have been there."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Everything we collected was catalogued. Everything."

She looked toward the ceiling, toward the laboratory and whoever had once worked above her.

"Who put that under the desk?"

Before Severin could answer, the bell stopped.

The sudden absence of it was more noticeable than the tolling had been.

From her position near the entrance, Grim had the clearest view of the change.

Movement appeared at the far intersection, perhaps a hundred feet down the street. Four Hounds emerged from between the leaning buildings, followed by two more hauling a rough barricade of timber and iron behind them.

They were easy enough to recognize even at that distance. The Hounds wore the same sort of practical, battered equipment Garrick had carried: layered leather and mail reinforced wherever another plate could be strapped on, heavy boots, weapons kept close and ready. Nothing about them matched well enough to suggest a formal uniform. Their commonality was in bearing. They moved like men accustomed to enforcing the Arch-Lector's authority in streets where an argument could become a killing in seconds.

One carried a crossbow already spanned. Another had a hooked polearm resting against his shoulder. Short swords, cudgels and axes hung from the others. Their armor was scratched and dirty, but their weapons were maintained.

They worked quickly and without shouting. One took position facing outward while the others dragged the obstruction across the road leading deeper into the inner quarter. A few civilians hurried through before the gap narrowed. One of the Hounds waved another pair forward, then began fastening a length of chain between the barricade and the corner of a stone building.

No one was being pursued. There was no visible fighting beyond them. Whatever had prompted the closure, it looked organized rather than panicked.

The road was not closed yet.

But it was closing.

Sky recovered the papers without needing another check.

You now have a named surviving witness at the sanctuary, a stronger lead on Alton, and confirmation that the Talonites arrived after the outbreak had already begun.

The inner-quarter route is still open for the moment. Mara remains pinned.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Everything we collected was catalogued. Everything."

She looked toward the ceiling, toward the laboratory and whoever had once worked above her.

"Who put that under the desk?"
His voice is a whisper in her ear,

Should have been catalogued, yes.

Should have.

I found a similar with one of your associates in the building across the street - the building that is much more structurally sound than a this one. Sadly, they are in no condition to identify it for us… but I have an idea of what it could be… maybe you are thinking the same thing.

Orris perks up his head as the ringing tolls its final tone.

“The ringing has ceased and time is slipping from you. Would you care to test what they withheld?”

Orris puts a reassuring hand on her shoulder waiting for her answer.

Mara did not answer immediately.

Her eyes stayed on the vial for a long moment, then dropped to the black tracery disappearing beneath the timber. Orris could almost see the argument taking shape behind her expression.

"If they had something..."

Her jaw tightened.

"They would have logged it."

Another pause.

"Unless they didn't want the rest of us to know."

That possibility seemed to trouble her more than the vial itself.

She looked back at Orris.

"Do it."

Severin remained beside the beam, watching without interrupting.

Mara consents to Orris's proposed treatment.

Taran, if Orris is following through, spend the 5 points from Lay on Hands and describe how he administers it.

Very well.

He pops the cork and gives it to her, gingerly,

Careful not to spill it. We will get you out of here so we can find out who did this to you.

Blame.

He props her up from behind with his arms under her arm pits to pull her free from the debris. As he does so, energy flows out from him and into her, encouraging her thoughts of frustration and suspicion.

This couldn't have been a random accident...this was sabotage...

He twists her frustration into anger and feeds her suspicions with determination.

When I Find out who it was...

Her thoughts are so preoccupied with questions of traitorous betrayal that there is no room to question the efficacy of the container's contents. It could be water for all that it matters. She'd already convinced herself the cure was in her hands and, using her bitter feelings, Orris empowers her belief with his Will.

I'm Ready to pull her free, Severin. She's fine.

I've marked my Lay on Hands off on my mini sheet above. I have 19 points left.
I'm curious to see what happens

Mara took the vial carefully from Orris and drank.

Severin shifted beneath the timber, waiting until Orris had his arms securely beneath her shoulders.

"Ready."

The beam rose.

Orris pulled while Severin held the weight clear. Loose stone spilled into the space beneath it, armor scraped across broken masonry, and Mara came free in a rush of dust.

At the same moment, Orris let the familiar power of his oath pass through his hands and into her.

The energy answered him normally. He felt the expenditure leave him.

The black tracery did not change.

Mara was too occupied with the extraction to notice. Once clear, she planted one hand against the floor and tried to push herself upright.

Her good leg caught her weight.

The other folded immediately.

Severin caught her before she struck the ground and lowered her against the wall. Mara stared down at the limb, then drove her fingers hard into the flesh below the thigh.

Nothing.

"I still can't feel it."

She tried again to move it, but the leg barely responded. Whatever damage had been done beneath the beam, Mara was not walking out under her own power.

Severin studied the limb for a moment before looking to the others.

"She isn't walking."

He adjusted the strap across his shoulder.

"If we're taking her with us, I can carry her."

His gaze dropped briefly to the black tracery.

"But I don't know how much of what she's told us about this plague is true. We still don't know how it spreads, or what staying this close to her might risk. And as for this business about me being resistant..."

He gave a slight shake of his head.

"That sounds more like a story built around a few observations than something I'd trust my life to."

There was no accusation in it. Only caution.

"If any of you would rather keep your distance, I understand. I can wrap the leg, take her separately, and meet you at the sanctuary."

Mara's expression tightened at that, but she said nothing. The empty vial remained clenched in her hand.

Severin looked to Orris for his decision.

Orris expends 5 Lay on Hands points. The black tracery remains unchanged.

Mara cannot walk independently. Severin is willing to carry her, but he is not assuming the Talonites' claims about the plague are reliable and is giving the party the option to keep their distance if they prefer.

Orris wasn’t disappointed by the outcome. He’s still learned something from the experiment,

“I guess we were wrong about it being a cure”

It did pique his interest on what it could be but it also made him very cautious. Generally, he was immune to diseases but, if he didn’t have the power to cure it, he probably could catch it.

“Too risky to bring her to the palace. It will be packed people. She might infect everyone. We need to leave her.

Orris’ cool facade was starting to crack. "Or cut the infection off.”
