If [insert company here] produced a collectors edition...

This is a follow-on from the thread that was recently raised from the dead:

http://www.enworld.org/forum/genera...snt-wizards-coast-license-older-editions.html

The question being asked here is that if WotC (or someone else with their permission) were to compile sets of edition books and reprint them as a collector's item, with high quality hard covers and reproduced art, beautiful layout, indices, etc. would you buy them?

I think TSR did something similar back in the day with the basic rules, ala the Rules Cyclopedia. The idea would be to compile the core books of an edition, and print as one book. So you'd get the 1e PHB, DMG, MM and perhaps UA and FF all in one very nice and shiny book that was nicely layed out and edited and perhaps with new art (although it could be argued that keeping the old art is part of the charm).

I just find the idea intriguing. I have a lot of 1e and 2e books myself but most are in disrepair from overuse and I'm missing a lot of volumes from them being lost or stolen over the years. I've tried to gather what I can through PDF's but on the whole, I'd much prefer a nice book. So if 'they' were to do this, I'd probably lay down some cash for it myself, even though I'd probably never play those editions again.

I should probably add the question of whether you would buy a basic reprinting of older games, rather than the above concept, just to broaden the topic a bit. That was the original intent of the thread but I got side-tracked :D

It would depend on the price point, the features involved, and the company.

Burned by Meisha Merlin? Not me!

But as a rule, I don't think I'd like it all in one book though, and I know I wouldn't pay for a leather-bound cover on parchment printed from ink mixed with the ashes of the authors.

If WotC produced a slipcase version of the MONSTER MANUAL, PLAYERS HANDBOOK and the DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE, as if they were first run print jobs with all the quirks those entailed (with an obvious notation that they were reprints) and assuming by "quirks" I don't mean the inverted MONSTER MANUAL pages that found their way into the first run of DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDEs or the deep cut caused by an errant piece of wire on the same print run, but rather the "candy striped" binding cloth, the no-ISBN etc. etc., I'd buy one. No, I'd buy two.

Or three.

Point being, I'd jump on it.

I would go for it. My dream was always one big rulebook, that was complete.

Heck, I would settle for a reprint of the RC.

Nope, I ahve never bought a collector's version of anything, and see no reason to start now. I buy gmaes to play, notto sit on a shelf

The same reason I ahve never bought two cpies of a gmae book either

I would buy reprints of the AD&D 1st Edition ore rulebooks (whether separately or as a compiled volume), and the BD&D Rules Compendium. I wouldn't be interested in other editions.

The other thing I would potentially have been interested in the 3.5e days was an "Encyclopedia Version" of the books - compile all the WotC spells into a single volume, all the monsters into a couple of volumes (sorted alphabetically across the whole range, and updated to the 'full' 3.5e rules for the Field Folio and MM2 creatures), the magic items into a third, prestige classes a fourth, and so on and so forth. Basically, the entire ruleset in a compiled format setup for ease of reference. (Of course, it didn't happen then, and it won't happen now. Plus, I doubt it would have sold enough to justify production.)

I'd buy reprints, but the idea of new art makes me cringe. (I've come to realize/accept that the art makes a big difference, for me, even if the rules are the same.) I'd love to buy a brand new 1e DMG, MM, and PH. And I'd *really* love to buy a brand new original D&D boxed set (e.g. the OCE boxed set would be just fine). I have them already, of course, but new books would definitely save wear-and-tear on my old books.

As far as a "single book solution" goes, I have a mild preference for separate books (or booklets, the the case of OD&D).

Hell, I'd love the ability to buy (legal) PDFs of the old stuff, like I used to be able to.

I would buy a reprint of OD&D and supps I-IV as I sold mine several years back :(

I'd also buy a one book version of B/X with all the original art/layout, etc.

I'd rather have a reprint compilation of all the B modules. Another for all the X modules, All the S modules, all the A modules, G/D/Q etc (none of that "supermodule" garbage)

AD&D books, both 1/2E are so easy to come by cheaply I don't see the necessity of reprinting those. I picked up the AD&D PHB/MM/DMG (original covers-Wiz logos) last summer for around $15 in incredibly good shape-interiors like new, spines also in very good shape with minor shelfwear to the covers.

I'll second PJ's "no new art" sentiment.
