Co-founder of darkwave/goth band Das Ich, Bruno Kramm, has died at age 58 of medical emergency.

Alas! Das Ich is one of my favorite bands. Saw them play in 2009 and they were incredible. My old band was supposed to open for them back in the 90s, but their US label folded mid-tour, leaving them with only a map and a list of tour dates to navigate the country with. They ended up completely lost and were half a state away when doors opened.

"The MarsBar" David Marsden, founding architect of Toronto's CFNY alternative radio station, has died at age 85 from complications after a fall. CFNY, though still on the air, is now nothing like the original and unique station that it was. In his years at the helm it grew into something that shaped the future, and some said controlled the (at the time) present of music across this country. I had been in the old farmhouse in north Brampton where it was born, several times. A true Canadian media legend is gone.

Radio is not like it used to be. Satellite wasn't an improvement. Radio's coverage area isn't like it used to be. When I was younger you could be 100 miles or more and pick up your local station. Today, I can't even get it 30 miles away. Then radio personalities are not the same either. DJs in one location hosting shows as if they're local but they could be across the country. Syndicated shows dominant these days.

It's truly sad the way the industry has gone. Back in MarsBar's heyday that tiny little station in an old farmhouse, then later above a club in what was laughably known as "downtown" Brampton, could make or break an artist's career across a nation.

Interestingly enough, my inability to pick up stations seems to have more to do with the antenna on my satellite-friendly car. The older style antenna on my truck picks up radio stations the car can't.

I've wondered about that. I drive a car with a satellite radio primarily and one without and the one without satellite also picks up local radio better. It's as if it's intentional.
