Into the Halls of Sartor

Wore my Cavaliers, and they felt great all day. Definitely worth considering getting in a dressier leather & color. HOWEVER, I got a quick reminder of why I’ve only had one other pair of suede footwear in a similar color*: they show everything.

When I took them off at the end of the day, there were spots on them. Don’t know what they were. Fortunately, Thursday pretreats their suedes to be water/stain resistant, and my suede-cleaning spray & brush took care of the issue pretty quickly.

* Rockport Eureka walking shoes. Not pretty, not stylish, but damned comfortable.

Yeah, that's why I haven't had any suede shoes in years. Even just water staining is very visible. Admittedly though, I've never had any that were protected like that.

Thursday goes the extra mile by pre-treating their products, but there’s also sprays & other products that help protect suede. I have used silicon based aerosols with good results.

I've tried silicon based sprays, but the results weren't really good. The term "spotty" is both figurative and literal here.

My understanding is that you kinda get what you pay for with those.

But ALL of them advise you test them on a section that’s not going to be as visible, if possible.

I had a DSW store credit, and I needed to use it as soon as possible because the card was doing its damnedest to fall into the jaws of our chewy, chewy puppies. Fortunately, there was a sale on.

…and I used part of it to buy a pair of these in navy blue suede.🤦🏾‍♂️

Well, my Thursday Cavalier Chelseas in Dune suede are teaching me lessons:
  1. light colored suedes show more dirt than white sneakers. I’m literally at least brushing them after every wear.
  2. Crepe outsoles are very comfortable and feel secure underfoot. But they seem to just hold onto crud in ways that other rubber or similar materials just don’t. At times, I looked down at my boots and they seemed surrounded by a halo of lint, carpet fibers, dog fur, and other things.
So while I like my Cavaliers, choosing this particular combo of upper and outsole materials will not be repeated by me.

I’ve also been breaking in my Wolf & Shepherd Cruise Lo sneakers, and learning different lessons. Whatever rubbery material they used for the soles on THESE shoes is the evil twin of the crepe outsoles on Thursday’s Cavalier. While both are light in color and comfortable, the Cruise’s outsole is a harder material, and is consequently less grippy. They’re still delivering more traction than the leather sole of a new dress shoe or cowboy boot, but that’s a LOW bar. I’ve experienced minor traction loss in situations that NO sneakers should ever fail.

So as well made as they are and as fun as they look, I won’t be buying more W&S sneakers.

And speaking of cowboy boots, my mom bought me a pair of black, almond-toe Dan Posts. Simple, clean and classic. Dressed up or dressed down, they’re good to go.

Went to the MD today, and he confirmed what I suspected- I’ve lost weight. Most of my pants are loose in the waist and I’m in the last hole on several of my belts. The surprise was how much. I’m down 10lbs from April and 20lbs from last year. I didn’t have a clue.

And I have pants I haven’t worn yet! Some from last month! But I’m also pretty sure I haven’t lost enough weight yet to get the next size down.
