Irregular natural attack die?

What happens if a natural attack, such as the crocodile's tail slap deals damage of a die type not usually used for it's size?

Crocodile's tail slap attack deals 1d12 damage... if it takes "improved natural attack", what does that become?

DMG p26 (or is it 29?)
Covers Damage Dice size increases and there will be a "one step" increase value for 1d12.
