D&D 5E (2024) Is the War Cleric Being Slept On?

Didn’t read the 18 pages of the thread and it seems the last page has veered firmly off-topic, but anyhow, I’ll throw this tidbit in here:

In a game we’ve played from levels 1 to 3 so far, the War Cleric is clearly the MVP. Bless, cure, wacks enemies on the head and even spends reactions to make teammates also succeed in wacking enemies on the head… and a tank to boot (took the path which gets armor prof), this truly is the full package.

Well if the war cleric was mvp 1-3 this just means cleric is MVP because war cleric as all subclasses are given at level 3.

And tvats exactly my point. Cleric is so strong as a class the subclasses dont give much, but they also dont need to.

Agreed, though I think the power level definitely ticked up at 3rd level, and it’s not because of 2nd level spells (I think that character might not have used a single one yet, though they did upcast Bless to catch one more teammate, and that’s definitely clutch, all base class).

The 3rd level War Cleric features are good at 3rd level. Doesn’t mean they’ll stay relevant forever (but they might).

It also doesn’t mean it’s the best Cleric subclass. All it means is that in that particular party it happened to be the MVP (compared to non-Clerics).

Thing with clerics. I dint think ones the best. Each new layers something else on top of base cleric.


Knowledge- skills and utility
Iife- healing
Light-blasting
Trickery- hard to define but its great
War-weapons and spells

Light cleric for example functionally is one of the best blasters. Whats best is campaign dependent. More importantly none are bad or underwhelming. Currently dealing with a knowledge cleric.
