Item Roles (Up through Rings 10/3)

This is something I've done for my group and I felt was interesting enough to pass along for those interested.

The concept is just as it says; if an item were a party member, what role would it fill. The idea is to allow a character to pick items to either expand his/her options as a whole to the team or to focus on improving his/her own prowess.

As with any of my threads, feedback is appreciated and I will followup until a time when I feel we're getting no more necessary feedback or it's for all intents and purposes done. I have armor for now, and I'm half way through weapons. These lists will include other items such as implements and even wondrous items. I will update them as more items become available through books or online (ddi; coming soon)

The link leads to the PDF Download with items organized by level, then alphabet (like in the PHB). The original file is Excel so if there are requests for any other sorting method, I'll post those too.

[sblock=Definition of Item Roles]
Controller - This item's powers and properties function as a Controller utility or attack several targets at a time. In rare cases, if an item could be both a striker and a controller, it's labeled as Controller since controller is the harder role to fill.

Defender - This item's powers and properties benefit your allies at your expense or protect you from attacks and damage through reduction or healing.

Leader - This item's powers and properties benefit your allies primarily and may include you.

Striker - This item's powers and properties specifically harm those trying to attack you, attack a single target, and/or act as a striker's utility power.[/sblock]

Item Roles - Armor
Item Roles - Weapons
Item Roles - Implements
Item Roles - Arm Slot Items
Item Roles - Feet Slot Items
Item Roles - Hand Slot Items
Item Roles - Neck Slot Items
Item Roles - Rings

This is already sort of in effect though...

Armors and Shields = Defender
Weapons = Striker
Magic Items = Leader/Controller
Adventuring Gear = ????

This is an interesting exercise, but I am not sure what the point is. How are you using this information? It it just for its own sake, or do you have an idea for an effect on the game?

Lookin' for some more clarity...

I use it as a point of reference for making loot bundles and for my players when they get a chance to buy gear of their own. And, it's also a convenient list of items compiled from the PHB and the Adventurer's Vault (so far) for quick leveling/treasure building.

The Item roles themselves, as described above, let the character blend roles like multiclassing does. A rogue can take a series of leader items that don't rely entirely upon cleric/warlord powers and help the party out. Or, if multiclassing into wizard, the fighter has some more options for me to drop into his rewards as we play.

Indeed, that's a good idea. I wouldn't be surprised if the designers sometimes have this in mind, too. ;)

I am glad to know this isn't for naught. :) I'm almost done with Holy Symbols atm. I'm gonna cover all the gear that is both in PHB and AV first, then move onto the mounts/companion items. Anybody got references to any unique items from DDI I can look for and include? I have the articles, but i'm lazy. I'll get to them after the other two though, if nothing else.

If you see a link in someone's sig to "hidden gems in Dugeon magazine", that's exactly what you're looking for. Unfortunately, I don't remember whose sig it is in. :(
