When a character is attacked by a black dragon with the acid breath weapon, and the character fails his/her save, do the items worn or carried by the character have to make a save as well? To further complicate this, does a character who passes the save, and take only half damage from the breath weapon, still have to (or even has to) make item saves as well?

Attended items only take damage if the character rolls a natural 1 on his saving throw... and even then, only one is affected. Read PHB p150 for details.
