I think Chris Perkins is the guy giving me hope for the future of D&D. His design work, advice column, general approach to DMing, Iomandra campaign, and union of new and old are all inspiring. He is such a positive force and one of the faces of the brand. I'm a serious fan.

Thane will be awesome. Content for pre and post Spellplague, also awesome. Romance... sure, why not.

I totally agree.

Mike Mearls strikes me as something of a "mad scientist". He's constantly tweaking with the rules often in a manner that feels like it isn't D&D but without fully considering the consequences in game (eg Iron Heroes).

Chris, however, seems to have a strong sense of what D&D is, regardless of the edition involved. I suspect that's probably because he is very active as a DM, is a noted adventure writer and has been for several editions. There is no substitute for seeing the game in play.

Yeah, I kinda agree, but I loved Mearls' stuff for late 3.5. (I like 4E too, but I see where you are coming from). For my mind this combination, along with Monte Cook's rules and writing brilliance looks like the perfect trio to take on a new edition (or just take 4E into the future).

Although Monte's articles have been, well, I won't say, he is a fantastic writer and I would rather base my judgements on what he has contributed to the game in the past.

That said, this is about Chris Perkins and his series of 'DMXP' articles have been brilliant - best since Ray Winnigher's Dungeoncraft articles.

(I ran my second 4E campaign in my own adaptation of Iomandra in 08 or 09? Good fun, but nowhere near as epic as CP's own campaigns).
