JLA/Avengers Comic Book

The book comes out tomorrow! I've been waiting 25 Years for this one, ever since George Perez first mentioned it at a comic book convention I attended as a kid.

Here's the scoup from my upstairs tenant (who manages a comic book shop). It is scheduled as a four-issue series, I believe 40 pages per issue. It also should come out close to an on-time monthly schedule, as they are wrapping up issue four as we speak. It is also supposed to feature everyone who was ever an Avenger or JLA member, and in all incarnations of both books!

Looking forward to this myself, although i didn't realise it was set for the first week of the month.

As far as shipping shcedule Perez wanted to make sure we had a good headstart so that there would be no problems inb that area.

Woah! That's some crossover. I'll look forward to reading that sometime...I can't imagine what or who the villain will be. I really, really hope this doesn't suck.

I just got it today and it's fantastic. The art is incredible, I would expect no less from George Perez. Some of the two-page spreads are literally breathtaking.

The story, if it continues on the current track, looks like it could be a new classic along the lines of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Marvels, Kingdom Come and Watchmen.

I do have one gripe, but it's a minor one and it may only bother me. It's not really a spoiler, but I'll give you some space anyway:

When the two teams eventually meet, they don't know each other. I thought the old Marvel vs. DC series from the mid-90's was in continuity for both universes. The heroes of both universes should know, or know of, each other. I just hope that some mention of this is made as the series chugs along.

There hasn't been any mention of that crossover in continuity since then except for that sequel (Where enom smacks Superman around. Yes he does. ) whose name happily eludes me. All crossovers are treated as if they are for the first time.

I still have the issue of "Comics Update" or whatever that industry magazine was that had an issue about Perez and the JLA?Avengers crossover, and why it didn't happen...
I wonder if Perez was able to use some of the art that he had completed for the story?

Probably not, since both universes changed so much since then (Green Lantern is now Kyle "dog collar" Rayner, Yellowjacket is now Giant Man again, Batman is drawn in gray and black instead of gray and blue). Also, Rob "bleech" Liefeld now owns those pages.

I'm reeeeally looking forward to this one, being a Pérez fan from his JLA/New Teen Titans/Crisis days...

I liked it. Major Spoilers to follow

The issue is mostly setup and it has a feel very much like the original Avengers/Defenders. Loved the different first impressions that each team got of the other world. And although Busiek telegraphed it from a mile away I really enjoyed Hawkeye's comment about the JLA being a group of Squadron Supreme wanna-bes. Starro on Marvel Earth was great, but couldn't they have found someone better than Terminex to go to the DC Universe? Gotta love a fight ending the issue that is starting with Thor vs. Superman - should make for a great splash page for issue #2.

And who would have ever thought that Atom would be set up as the one to save the day? Heck, even when I recently read 1980's New Teen Titans #4 to my kids, with Titans vs. the JLA, my oldest daughter's first impression of Atom was "All he does is get little? What good is that for a power?" Even after he climbed into Wonder Girl's ear and threw off her equilibrium she was still unimpressed.

Hey, I've got a question for those of you up on your current DC Universe facts (unfortunately I'm more up on my Marvel Universe) - what's the deal with Aquaman's left hand? I was aware that it had been cut off and replaced with a harpoon, but am I correct in assuming that he's also got some sort of detachable prosthetic hand? I notice the harpoon isn't there all issue until the climactic showdown at the end. I'm hoping this is as it should be and not just a horrendous oversight.

I was very disappointed with it.

It relied far too much on each group jumping to conclusions about the other, without stopping to consider anything, or ask questions or make any effort to contact their counterparts!

Plus, Atom peeking round doors in the Super Villains base - bah. How did he get there? Where's the security? Couldn't they think of anything better?

It just seemed like a bunch of excuses to have the two teams fight each other for a bit, realise they shouldn't be enemies, put together the items needed, have a sudden twist, win the day regardless. I'd put money on a hero from each team either dying or falling in love, too. :)
