Justice League [Secret Society]

gfunk

First Post
I liked this episode quite a bit. A few highlights, IMO:

  • Seems like Sinestro can make much better use of his ring than GL. Talk about multi-tasking! He can dual wield, baby!
  • Grod through the uprights at the end was pretty sweet.
  • Flash trying to ferret information out of thugs a la Batman was neat.
  • Also enjoyed the "trust" exercises at the beginning when Parasite ang Gigantia fell off a cliff backwards and had to trust Sinestro to catch them.

While this one didn't grab me like last week's, it WAS fun to see a working team of evil, especially the return of three old favorites, Grodd, Clayface (though they kind of under-used him), and of course Sinestro.

I recognized a few of the villains, but not all of them.

Gorilla Grod: Was this the gorilla villain from the gorilla city?

Gargantua: Who the heck was this? Seems to have some history with Grod, being that she apparently started out as a gorilla.

Shade: Only recognized him from the first anti-Justice League, started by Luthor.

Sinestro: Only recognized him as some sort of GL villain.

Killer Frost: No idea who she is.

Clayface: Recognized him as the former actor turned villain from the Batman Animated Series.

Leech: Recognized him from the Superman Animated Series.

Some comments:
Shade's reaction to finding out that Gargantua was formerly a gorilla. Heh heh heh...

What happened with Leech? I thought his powers lasted longer than that--at least a day--but he apparently burns through his absorption much faster now.

Green Lantern: What's his story? I know about the original GL, and I know about the GL from the Superman Animated series, but haven't seen John Stewart before. (Admittedly, I'm a cartoon fan, not a comic book fan.)

That's all I can think of, off hand...

Shade was popular in the new Starman comic series. He was an immortal and originally a Golden Age villian. I have a few issues of Starman featuring Shade and they are pretty good.

Killer Frost is from the Firestorm comic series (I actually have 75% of that series).

Sinestro is a renegrade Green Lantern and was one of Hal Jordan's biggest arch-nemesis in the Silver Age. He was given a yellow ring from the anti-matter universe of Qward (not sure of the spelling right now).

Although I'm kind of annoyed at how GL's ring still works. I thought the whole point of Sinestro's yellow ring was that the green rings couldn't affect the color yellow.

Endur-
-I am sure someone that knows the comics a lot better than I do can give you better details.
But, At some point several years ago, I believe when Kyle Rayner (sp?) became the "only" GL, his ring did not have the "impurity" that causes the yellow weakness.
I am also pretty sure it did not (nor still does not) require 'recharging' (the newly restored rings Do still need to recharge iirc) and I think the newer rings do Not have the yellow weakness. This is fine as it seemed like an arbitrary weak spot to allow the writers an easy out if they wanted to threaten GL. Also I don't see how the Quardians (sp?) could make a ring without a weakness and the Guardians could not. I believe the weakness in the green rings was to keep the ring wielders in line.

Now on to the show itself....

I Loved it!

It was maybe my favorite episode so far this season.

Again no "bad pseudo-physics" to mess up (re:Eclipsed). No, "Huh they changed him to much" (re:Eclised/Eclipso) or "I thought he should be stronger" (I was disappointed in how poorly, imho, Doctor Fate dealt with Hawkgirl, I thought he would be stronger.;))

There was a Lot of nice dialog between All the characters. I really liked the way a good portion of the episode focused on the Society. They are, right now, my favorite DC group.
Sinestro was Great! He was really showing a lot of skill and I think that the only thing that put Gl in his class was incredible will and a dogged determination. But IMO Sinestro showed more skill with the ring and I really hope to see him again.

Giganta, well what was not to like there?
Esp. the interaction between her and both Killer Frost and Shade. I also really liked at the end where she punched Superman through their flight craft.

Killer Frost taking care of Edge "off screen" very nice!

Flash got to be really true to being the Flash and had some great moments, esp. W/Superman and the 'You should have used your heat vision' statement and then playing "Batman" on the thugs,

Shade was his best yet! I felt he was much more like himself as appearing in Starman. Very cool this episode.

And Grodd was actually played as being highly intelligent. made great use of tactics and his powers. And did some nice fighting at the end of the second ep.

Parasite seemed to stay well in character from his appearances in the Superman Animated series. Re" if his powers should have lasted longer or not, we don't really know how long they do last exactly nor do we know how long had passed between events so I am not too worried about that part. I often go back to Superman for a 'recharge' in Supes show so-

Clayface seemed to do well, he got to pretend to be Flash and I don't think Batman was 100% sure that he wasn't the Flash, as he said "The real Flash would have dodged that" so I think he just took a chance on his suspicions.
And he was ready to take on the Entire League by himself at the end!

I also liked Superman venting his feeling like he needs to protect the other team members because he is (arguably) the most powerful.
Gl had a nice quip at Manhunter about not being the one who can read minds. And Hawkgirl sniping at WW and calling her princess or something like that.

Again I was disappointed in Manhunter and felt he could do better so maybe GL should work on training Him better! He did very well play out being Clayface but he should have been able to phase out of the ice rather than have Flash get him out. It must take him longer to phase than I think it does and I guess the freezing cold of the ice must have stopped his focus or something..?
But that was about it for what I didn't like.

BTW did I mention that Sinestro Rocked?!
And Shade was cool, and Giganta was..charming ;)

well anyhow- all the above is IMHO and YMMV of course!
Thanks for reading! :D

I loved it to tiny bitsy pieces! Another great episode.

Many brilliant moments. The 'Falling' exercise was hysterical. Grodd, voiced here par excellance by Powers Boothe, is both intelligent and controlled without the normal megalomania of a Luthor or Savage. An amusing mix of villians, with one of the best animated villains EVAR, Clayface.

There were some highly amusing bits throughout the episode, and some interesting references throughout. Morgan Edge was always a jack-ass, but buying Clayface and keeping him in a private collection? Yeesh. Killer Frost's solution was well-done and Giganta was, as mentioned, charming. I turned to my wife and said "Is she wearing heels?"

The falling exercise was great, as was the characterization of all the characters, hero or villian, in this episode. Flash, in a continuing trend, gets to be The Flash, and not comic-relief boy. The relationship between GL and Hawkgirl continues to develop subtly, and Superman gets to act a little arrogant.

"I wish I'd thought of that. Oh, wait. I DID."

Two random thoughts: One, don't overdo it with making Superman flawed. I like it when Supes is allowed to have a few foibles....just don't make him a jerk, either. He's still a darned decent guy. There is a middle ground between Captain Marvel and Lobo, ya know.

Second, I can't help but notice that in the DCU, cold powers are tantamount to 'psychopath', whereas in the Marvel Universe, it translates into 'ineffectual'. Funny, that. :)

I'll truly be disappointed when we run out of episodes, which I assume will be very soon, now.

While I certainly liked the episode, but my only gripe would be how weak Martian Manhunter came across. MM should have been able to dismantle Clayface without any difficulty. They are not in comparable power leagues. Other than that it was a fine episode.

Also to explain Sinestro's background, he is a former GL who betrayed the Corps (well actually he went megalomaniac and took over his planet) and was banished from the Corps. He is from a race which the Guardians were not permitted to kill (some ancient pledge). The character Katma Tui from the Despero episode is of his race. She is his successor. The Weaponers of Qward provided him with the yellow ring to make an anti-GL. He is a very skilled operator since he's been at it so long (GL, then anti-GL). Since he's the one who preceeded the person who trained John Stewart, it stands to reason that he would be more proficient.

It does appear that they are using Kyle Rainer style rings without the weakness to yellow (which was included to limit the powers of the operator). One interesting thing about Sinestro's ring is that it is powered by Green Lantern energy. Guy Gardner, at one point, obtained the ring, but when the Corps got wiped out, it went dead because he could never recharge it.
