Kio'oukath Spearbearer: Male goliath hoplite/arbalestier [please critique]

JiCi

First Post
Greetings, it's your host JiCi again.

I had another PC idea, but I would be grateful if you could give me feedback about it. Seems I got a liking for Blackdirge's templates and weapon-specific PrCs, but hey, if it can be done, it's legal. Here's Kio'oukath Spearbearer Uninmathoakoo (god, that's long for a name, but that's goliath names work), a hoplite/arbalestier, or if you prefer a crossbow-wielding spearman. Weird ? Probably... Legal ? Totally ! See my comments at the end.

Both the Hoplite and Arbalestier PrCs can be found at the ENWorld Online Store, from Blackdirge Publishing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Powerful Build (Ex) Kio'oukath’s physical stature lets him function in many ways as if he was one size category larger. Whenever Kio'oukath is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), he is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. He is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. Kio'oukath can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities and spells that change Kio'oukath’s size category.
Mountain Movement (Ex) Kio'oukath can make standing jumps and high jumps as if they were running long jumps and high jumps. He can also engage in accelerated climbing without taking the -5 penalty to Climbing checks.
Acclimated (Ex) Kio'oukath does not take penalty or suffers negative effects from high altitudes.
Spearman (Ex) Kio'oukath is a master of the spear, and has received special training in the handling of his weapon. This training allows him to handle the spear in a unique fashion, gaining a tactical advantage over other spear wielders. He may use the standard spear as a one-handed weapon at no penalty, allowing him to employ a shield.
Phalanx Fighter (Ex) Trained to fight in tight formations with his fellow soldiers, Kio'oukath gains additional protection from his own shield and the shields of those surrounding him. Whenever directly adjacent to an ally with a heavy steel, wooden, or tower shield, Kio'oukath gains a +2 circumstance bonus to AC and a +1 circumstance bonus to Reflex saving throws for each such ally, up to a total of +4 to AC and +2 to Reflex saving throws when flanked by other shield-bearers.
Dynamis (Ex) Twice per day, Kio'oukath may enter a state of total concentration, focusing his awareness into a single pinpoint of martial precision. While under the effects of dynamis, Kio'oukath gains a +2 morale bonus to attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, Kio'oukath is considered to have the Improved Critical feat for any melee weapon he wields, even if he does not normally qualify for the feat. Dynamis lasts for 5 rounds.
Mighty Thrust (Ex) When using the Power Attack feat while wielding the spear with one hand, Kio'oukath adds 1.5 times the number subtracted from his melee attack rolls to his damage rolls.
Skewer (Ex) When Kio'oukath scores a critical hit with the spear, he forces the opponent to make a Fortitude DC 24 saving throw or be impaled. The save is Strength-based. Kio'oukath can choose to leave his weapon in the body of his opponent, or, as a free action, he can attempt to rip the weapon free, which requires a DC 10 Strength check and inflicts full weapon damage plus Strength modifier on the impaled foe. If Kio'oukath chooses to leave his weapon in the body of the foe (or if he is unable to remove it) the impaled target suffers 1d6 points of damage for each round the weapon remains in his body. In addition, an impaled target of up to one size category larger than Kio'oukath may only move at half speed and suffers a –2 to all attacks rolls, saving throws, ability checks, and skill checks. An impaled foe can attempt to remove a spear from his body with a DC 10 Strength check, which requires a full round action. Removing a spear in this fashion inflicts full weapon damage. Alternately, a successful Heal check (DC 15) allows the removal of the impaling spear without inflicting the extra damage.
Master Overrun (Ex) When using the overrun special action, Kio'oukath may make a single attack against his target with his spear if he succeeds at knocking his opponent prone. He can still continue his movement after attacking the downed opponent.
Armor Penetration (Ex) Combining his considerable skill with the deadly impact of his chosen weapon, Kio'oukath can largely ignore an opponent’s armor at close range. At 1st level, when using a heavy crossbow, the arbalestier subtracts 9 points from a target’s natural, armor, or shield bonus to AC when within one range increment and applies only to natural, armor, and shield bonuses to AC (including magical versions). It has no effect on other bonuses to AC, such as Dexterity modifiers, deflection, and size modifiers.
Swift Reload (Ex) Kio'oukath may reload a heavy crossbow as a swift action. This does not allow Kio'oukath to fire more than once per round, but it does remove the necessity of spending a move action to reload.
Increased Damage (Ex) Kio'oukath is able to inflict greater damage with his chosen weapon, increasing the base damage as if it was 3 size categories larger than usual.
Augmented Critical (Ex) Kio'oukath inflicts triple damage on a successful critical hit with a heavy crossbow.
Greater Point Blank Shot (Ex) Kio'oukath gains a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls with the heavy crossbow at ranges up to 60 feet. In addition, the range at which Kio'oukath can inflict precision-based damage, such as sneak attack, is also increased to 60 ft. The bonuses granted by greater point blank shot supersede and do not stack with the bonuses gained from the improved point blank shot ability.
Master Critical (Ex) Kio'oukath doubles the threat range for any heavy crossbow he uses. In addition, master critical stacks with both the Improved Critical feat and the keen weapon special ability.

Not bad, huh ? Here are a few clarifications:
- The goliath PC race is in Races of Stone.
- The great crossbow is in Races of Stone, and can be treated as a heavy crossbow using the weapon equivalency system.
- The crossbow sword bayonnet is in Complete Scoundrel, and it's written that it is treated as a spear.
- The gauntlet shield is in Races of Stone, it's basically a heavy steel shield that keep your hand free. While you cannot wield weapons, you can pull back a crossbow string and manipulate bolts to reload.

EDIT: tweak a few stuff here and there.
- The quick-loading enhancement is in the Magic Item Compendium, which reduces the crossbow loading time by one action step. As such, a great crossbow goes from a full-round action (standard) to a move action (Rapid Reload) to a free action (quick-loading).

So what do you think ? Feel free to post your comments !

Oh yeah, here are a few more other things:

-Why do you post these ?
Mainly because this board is used frequently for character optimization. Sure, I could post these at Wizards of the Coast boards, but I'm using a bunch of 3rd party books, which is kinda forbidden in the WotC boards.

- What will these PCs give you ?
It's a been a while since I've played in a D&D game; I'm currently a DM for an Eberron campaign. So if I'm invited to play a game, I have all my stats and progression ready so I won't whine nor complaitn about a messed-up character while playing.

- Why do you use Blackdirge's books ?
Because I want to, and also because those books just spring lots of character ideas compared to the others.

- Can I use these characters in my game ?
I do not hold any copyright over any of them, so yes you can use them either as PCs or NPCs, provided you possess the other books I've used during creation.

- What are you trying to prove here ?
That there is no such thing as "munchkin" or "powergaming", just people who can't read. In other words, I'm trying to show unusual, unique and interesting ability combos to other people, players and DMs alike.

There you have it. Enjoy your reading !

Gotta explain the 12-20 threat range... I don't get it.

Same remark as all your builds, low survivability for your CR: low HP and AC, no DR, awful saves (Will +5 at CR 21, you're kidding, aren't you?). A spellcaster/psionic 8 class levels lower could take you out of the fight with a single swift action. You can't detect invisible creatures, have a hard time with incorporeals, cannot fly/spiderclimb/teleport. You know, damage output isn't the only important thing when designing a build...

As noted by Kat', and it does seem to be true for all your characters, it's very much a glass cannon. Lots of ability to inflict damage, but very limited ability to absorb damage. A low-level spellcaster would murder the guy without any effort, and a really melee-oriented PC of 18th lvl or so could probably drop him in one round. I'm currently DMing an Eberron game with five 15th lvl PCs, using a lot more core material than your PC is, and he'd definitely go down in one round versus them even if I took the party wizard out of the equation.

I'd recommend dropping a lot of the resources focused on offense and switching them to things which'll keep the PC alive. You're missing a lot of basic things you need to survive. Drop all the +5 items to +4 and spend the money you'd save (a lot!) on items like a Cloak of Resistance +5, a Ring of Deflection, etc.

The great crossbow has a 18-20 threat range, Master Critical doubles that range to 15-20, which stacks with Improved Critical.

Ok, so I could rearrange the items to get a Cloak of Resistance. And again, I don't see the necessity to have that many transportation methods.

Ok, I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the info.

D'oh. That's ugly.

Let's say you're facing a dragon. Oh, it flies. And has spells and a Breath weapon, and most probably Flyby Attack, and a fly speed of, what, 120'?, and a whole lot of hit points. Hmmm... hopefully you can nail him out of the sky before he burns you to ashes. What was your Reflex save again?

(Just saw your last post) That could be problematic, but then again, I'll probably try to get a safe place first before trying to start shooting. While I could get an item that gives an energy resistance, my HP and low Reflex save won't help that much, yet a full-fledged 20th-level fighter doesn't have an impressive Reflex save.

What do you suggest then ? and can you please stop talking/writting like that ? You make me look like a total retarded, and I really don't like it. I'm looking for some constructive feedback here, not for overwhelming flaming. Okay ?

He gave a simple and very clear example of why you would, at the very least, want flight or other movement modes (get out of the way before the dragon zooms in to stomp at you).

Insulting people who point out clear gaps in a 20th-level character's array of abilities isn't going to encourage many people to actually respond to you.

All I said was simply to go from this:

"Let's say you're facing a dragon. Oh, it flies. And has spells and a Breath weapon, and most probably Flyby Attack, and a fly speed of, what, 120'?, and a whole lot of hit points. Hmmm... hopefully you can nail him out of the sky before he burns you to ashes. What was your Reflex save again?"

to this:

"Let's say you're facing a dragon. As you might know, it has lots of HPs, spells, a DC 40-ish breath weapon and a fast fly speed. True you can hit it with your crossbow while it flies, but if it breathes... you're dead, and a pile of ashes."

All I asked was to be less hard on me, because it makes me looks like a n00b. Look, Kat's advices are all taken into account without harm done, and I'll be glad if Kat' comes here and posts tips to improve this character, but next time, I only want this person to be less rough on pointing the obvious. That's all.
