Trailer Lanterns | Official Teaser | HBO Max

I read an article over the weekend (that I can't find now) that explain that the show is told in two time periods -- 2016 (pre James Gunn Suicide Squad) and 2026 (now). It should be interesting to see how that informs everything.
I was curious about that in the second trailer. It definitely looks like some flashbacks will be happening.

Hmm. The phrasing in the trailer makes it sound like Jon is trying to get Hal's ring, rather than his own, which is not exactly how it works in the comics. I assume that's just the trailer editors making things seem more dramatic and "over my dead body" is just a reflection of Hal being a jerk. Well, more of a jerk.

Veiled reference to how Jordan got the ring in the Ryan Reynolds film? Gunn likes his callbacks. (He's a producer for the show.)

I never saw that movie, but Hal has typically gotten his ring from a dying Abin Sur. But we don't yet know why he and Jon and driving around together and discussing Jon getting a ring. This certainly isn't how the Guardians historically do things, but we're clearly missing a ton of context at the moment.

In the original continuity, Hal and Guy were the GLs of the sector but Guy got knocked out of commission and Hal and the Guardians started looking for a potential replacement. I suspect something similar will happen, and it should actually be interesting to learn more about this version of guy.

It is how it works in the comics. They are passed down. There are a finite number of rings- one ring per sector.
