I guess trust no one? Interesting set up with the slaughterhouse, using lasers programmed to do the cuts, but wouldn't the heat at least cook the edges if not the whole piece of meat?

They're really dissecting both of their characters. John and the line between obedience and morality. Hal and the line between being evil and being afraid of being replaced. Everyone manipulating everyone.

If it’s not the wife, then I’m at a loss to why the character is even there or why she wants to seduce John (and why John doesn’t think it’s weird that random wife of town leader wants to screw his brains out the minute he’s in town unless this is a very different kind of show from what I was expecting )

Crap I know from reasearch that I did many years ago, before the advent of laser diodes. It's easier to get high energy discharge by pulsing magnetic fields in short bursts. This was done with early ruby lasers (tube of ruby with a fully refective surface on one side and a partially reflective surface on the other; light emitting gas tube wrapped around the cylinder). Short bursts of laser light cause rapid expansion in the location of the hit, effectively blasting a chunk out due to the expansion.
