Spoilers Lanterns season 1 spoilers discussion

None of those are even saying what you're saying. That first one doesn't mean that guardians understand family. They understand membership in a structure. One of them died at the hands of someone the ring chose. Therefore, the choosing process is flawed.

The other ones were them couching things in the terms that John would understand - parroting things they've seen, i.e. humans are social creatures. You don't have to understand something to parrot it, nor to try to apply logical constructs to it.
Agree to disagree.

In 1986 is when Bernie says it. As Morrus said, you've already given your perspective even without that, so I'll stop trying to even engage, but in 1986, when she said the supposedly offending words, she was already in her late 20s/30s. That means she grew up in the 50s or 60s.

And just for reference:

That was in '86. In '96 we never saw her. That was what created the tension when John was taking the shot.
Try stick to the topic...
1. How old is John in 1996 when watching Hal Jordan?
2. How old do you imagine he was when his mom said those words to him? She says to him just before he selects her for the apple shooting exercise.

If you still think she said it to him in '86 - I can't help you.

Now I want to know who/what is the weenie in this episode? What do the various narrator's want us to look at so we miss the real attraction?
I think it was the zapping (?) of Zoe and all the reactions by the characters. We are led to believe that she is the manhunter... she might be, but I think the real one is the Sheriff

Even if it was in 1996, which it seems to me like it was, its not like systemic racism is even close to being dead - then or now. The fact that there is more representation does not equate to, nor erase, the fact that johns parents grew up in the 50s, 60s, or 70s. And then systemic racism was even more pronounced now.

I guess Captain America forgetting he is part of the Avengers team is not a disaster.

Certainly.

Episode 3:
Guardian Understands Family
John asks why is the guardian interviewing GLs for the job
Guardian replies, because of your condolences.

Guardian Understands and
"You must think of Hal Jordan, he was chosen instead of your father"
"Sinestro was Jordan's teacher, a father figure"
Does Not Understand Family
"He still harbors deeps affection for his mentor, it is quite troubling"
John Stewart says "It's human..."

Guardian Does Not Understand Family
John Stewart says "I cannot explain family to someone who does not have one."
Guardian asks "And your parents do you love them?" ..."You owe them? And how do you intended to repay them?"

Guardian Understands Family
"Should you become GL you will become more isolated. Will they not miss you?... You will not miss them?"

Yes :)
These are weird categories to put those lines in because it all clearly defines that the Guardian does not understand family and is either trying to ask questions to understand it, or is attempting to relate to something it does not understand...

It's all pretty consistent with a highly-intelligent species encountering a concept, learning about it gradually though questions... Also consider that some of those lines are at least 20ish years apart between the conversation with John's mom and John as an adult... the Guardians are not frozen in time and, as a highly-intelligent and powerful people, have learned quite a bit in the meantime.

Not impressed so far with either of the lanterns intelligence. They are basically alive because the enemy doesn’t want the other lanterns to show up
The management of the lanterns seems borderline evil and I wanted John to tell them to blank off at 1 point

I'm kinda expecting Hal to have something up his sleeve with the way he's being cagey with the Guardians... even if he has gone sour on them, he still takes his job seriously and I doubt that he is going solo on all this...

I also kind of expect him to actually have made friends with the other lanterns, especially Ch'p, "the squirrel one" as he described him, and, if I'm right, I hope that means we actually get to see them show up as backup.

Kind of weird that it doesn't understand family, it's one of those things that never really makes sense in these things as they make humanity this special thing in the universe. Surely, for as long as the lanterns have been around, the guardians have encountered the concepts of family, I doubt all the different races that make up, and have made up the lanterns have never had a family.

So, the argument is now that it's not that the authors don't understand the character, but that the Guardians should have encountered and understood family from how other alien cultures (that we don't know anything about) define it?

I feel as if you are struggling to find reasons to not like this and are reaching too far for the arguments

You might be confusing me with another poster this is a whole new argument from me, I don't think I've been saying anything about the authors.
