Spoilers Lanterns season 1 spoilers discussion

As far as I can tell this is following the tropes pretty well of the cynical noir protagonist. I saw a good list of traits and one of those is that they "bumble" their way through solving the case. What it really is is that the noir protagonist can't get out of their own way. They are their own stumbling block. I see the writers doing that both with Hal and John. And I think they are doing it very well.

The mother using the phrase "they don't see us" during the '96+ where there were the likes of Oprah, Prince, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, Diana Ross, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Bill Codby, Samuel L Jackson, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman etc etc etc. It's like they're unaware of the time period and there is only 1 script for every decade of America.
You were not clear. She said it in '86 which was when she first said it. We don't even see what year it is when she says it to him when she tells him that. Which was why it wasn't clear. Youre making assumptions. Which is all you're doing.

These are weird categories to put those lines in because it all clearly defines that the Guardian does not understand family and is either trying to ask questions to understand it, or is attempting to relate to something it does not understand...

It's all pretty consistent with a highly-intelligent species encountering a concept, learning about it gradually though questions...
And yet the Guardian who doesn't understand family described the relationship between Jordan and Sinestro to be paternal-son.

Also consider that some of those lines are at least 20ish years apart between the conversation with John's mom and John as an adult... the Guardians are not frozen in time and, as a highly-intelligent and powerful people, have learned quite a bit in the meantime.
Nope. This was 1 conversation with John...episode 3.

So, question.

They had to dig in sneakily because of four sniper towers which would kill them, according to John. The phrase IIRC we re that a sniper would “get [Hal] for good this time”.

OK, he got hit by a sniper a couple episodes back because the ring was out of juice. But this time it isn’t.

So what’s the problem? I mean, if it was just about stealth and wanting to not be discovered, that makes sense. But he was clearly posing it as a “you will get killed by a sniper” problem, not a “you will blow our cover” problem.

Hal could literally just go in by force (well until they discover those darkness guns with counter the ring, but they don’t know about those). I get the reasons he doesn’t, but I’m just curious why John thinks he couldn’t.

1986 or 1996…does it really matter? Does 10 years make any difference? Sure, in both decades there were famous minority celebrities. That for sure doesn’t mean there wasn’t systematic racism still going on, that the average black family wasn’t dealing with on a daily basis. The Rodney King riots were in 1991…did all that disappear in five years?

And you can go even further back, and find lots of famous black musicians, during decades where it was even worse. So, I don’t see the fact that say, everyone loved The Cosby Show, means the average American black family was ‘being seen’.

Hal may not be able to hear the bullet in time to put up a bubble.
