Honest to God, I'm kind of amazed that they did like two scenes of little Hal and had the most efficient backfill of Hal and who he is you could basically ask for. Combined with the Halogram on the boat, and it's wild to have the most humanized version of Hal Jordan since, I dunno,
The New Frontier? Possibly even more than that, to be honest. Kyle Chandler probably deserves an Emmy for this show.
Aaron Pierre, too, getting to banter with Hal and be more than just frustrated is a great. He's just quietly beaming after the Halogram compliments him, like he's been waiting for this unsolicited praise his entire life (which, well, he
has been). Again, it's great to see the further we get from the 2016 finale, the more we get to see John open up and be what he wants to be, which I'm guessing is going to end in the finale with him actually flying for the first time ("a bird freed from his cage" and all that).
On the blackmail, I assumed John was just entertaining the idea to buy time to investigate Hal's death. If he admits that he was both in town and broke Hal's nose it makes him a prime suspect. So, its a classic example of an investigator throwing off suspicion of themselves in order to stay on the case. However, with John transferring funds it seems like he is looking to pay the ransom, which seems like a bad idea.
He really needs time, given that he's a black man in Nebraska in a town that has every reason to already hate him and want him locked up for... well, any reason they can get to stick.
On Sinestro, Hal might have had something to do with Sinestro's bust out and current location. Im guessing there is some end game afoot where Sinestro has info on some scheme of importance. Of course, Sinestro is entirely untrustworthy but its a situation where he has something to offer so you gotta dance with the devil.
I do wonder if it was just Hal, or if he was working with other Lanterns. Maybe there are Lanterns who don't trust what the Guardians are trying to do with him.
My worry is that the finale will be a simple make a golem body for Hal-o-gram and nothing major will be resolved, leaving things wide open for another season. Not saying I dont want another season, but I dont prefer that kind of writing and execution. The alternative though is the pace will go break neck and a ton of stuff will happen but in rapid succession that might be fulfilling, but feel like pace whiplash from what came before.
Yeah, the finale should be in keeping with the tone and stakes. The “father to son” theme of children inheriting the problems of their parents will likely mean Noah has to reconcile that he’s the child of a Manhunter and what that means. Will it be a big action packed blowout where Noah is the villain, or a victim of his nature? I’m hoping for lower stakes, personally and maybe the reveal that Sinestro has acquired a fear based ring to set up season 2.
My hope is we move away from the noir elements. It was fine for this season becaus the story kept me guessing and I really liked the two leads, but I’d like to get back to superheroes being superheroes.
Yeah, I am kind of worried as to where we go, but it's kind of always like this with good shows: will they nail the dismount? I thin k we're going to get something quieter given how the show has been, but I'm not fully sure. Given that we're supposed to see John in the upcoming film, at the least a decent portion of things will be resolved. I'm guessing Sinestro is going to be allowed to get away for services rendered regarding
something, but we'll see.
And I really have faith that we won't get a "golem", though, largely because the ring backup kind of solves that on its own. It's a bit more Firestorm than Green Lantern, but I like Hal more as a ghost than as a guy (and I think he, like Barry Allen, works better in that way).
