Legend of the 5 Rings fourth edition.

I know there are fans around here, so who besides me think announcing a 4th edition at Gen Con like they did was not "good" news?

I cannot even see a need for a 4th edition. Sure, some vocal people on line act like the world is ending because of editing issues with even the revised printing, however I personally have been having tons of fun and we have even had 9 players reliably show up week after week for our games.

Plus I just recently got the last 2 books published for 3E and we haven't even been able to integrate anything from them into our games yet.

So I am far from wanting, let alone being ready for, a 4th edition.

What about the rest of you?

As much as I like L5R, I gave up on following official updates about 2-3 years ago. The game moves too fast for my own taste. That's fine with cardgames, but terrible with RPGs, in my opinion.

So, I'll keep with 3E for all my L5R needs. The system is good enough for us, and we won't be updating storyline anyway; I see the Clan Wars era as the best one to run, and I still do that when it becomes our game of choice.

Cheers,

I don't play L5R, though I think I picked up the 3e PDF during a sale (or was it with stimulus money? I forget) a while back -- but didn't 3e just come out a couple of years ago? That's awfully quick.

I believe it came out in 2005, and they will be releasing 4E the second quarter of 2010. So yeah, that is part of my problem, I am not done playing with 3E.

Their vague design notes sound real promising, but I simply am not prepared to switch to a new edition, especially since I am still enjoying 3E so much, and still have tons of material to yet explore.

Wow, that was awfully quick. :p

You know, I could understand going to 3e after having gone d20 for a while and needing to get back to their old fan base. But five years is an awfully short time. What prompted this?

Of course, I'd still be good playing the d20 version. But I'm an odd duck that way. I like both versions.

I've enjoyed a few games of L5R 3E. I'm not sure in what directions they should go with a fourth edition.

I think they should develop a new IP and let L5R continue it's decline for a few more years.

I guess it's easier developping a new edition.

Really?!? That does seem like it's a little too sudden unless their idea of 4th edition is just incorporate all the errata, but if they're going for major rule changes, it's kind of too much. I haven't even picked up 3e yet and have that as my "I would like to" list. I had 1e and thought the game was awwwwesome.

Well, maybe AEG is hoping to undo the fiasco that was the 3ER, which was intended to fix a lot of the issues with the 3E book, but wound up being so poorly edited that it caused a whole bunch of new issues.

I've enjoyed what little 3E I've played, but I'll reserve judgment on the 4E version until I see it.

Although I think I recall hearing that they were pretty much going to split the game off from being reliant upon the CCG storyline and free things up a bit more so GMs can more easily set their games in different eras. Something that, while a neat idea, probably should have been done a long time ago.

Ah, I was probably confusing 3e revised w/original 3e.

5 years isn't an insane length of time for a new edition; it's shorter than I'd like, but it's not terribly uncommon (e.g., Shadowrun had three editions in its first 10 years of existence).

If the current edition is messed up, and the new edition fixes things, then that might be a good thing. <shrug>
