Market Price vs 1/2 and XP?

Could a wizard create an item by paying the full market price and no XP, instead of half-price and XP? Official rules (or non) for this?

Is there a rule somewhere that allows exchanging money for XPs for the purposes of item creation? I saw some threads quoting the "5gp = 1XP" rule, but I don't know where they got that.

I am not familiar with any rule that allows this. I would be very surprised if one was to be introduced. As to the 5gp=1xp, I cannot say without knowing the context of the comment.

Nope. You cannot interchange money and XP.

The 5gp per XP rule is for prices for services: if you hire a spellcaster to cast a spell for you with an XP cost, he'll charge you 5gp per XP he spends, in addition to the usual fees for the casting (caster level * spell level * 10 gp IIRC).

When you create a magical Item, you have to put a part of yourself into it. If you want a magic Item without expencing XP for it, you have to buy it (or commision one, so someone else will create it for you). There's also house rules that say that someone else can spend the XP for you (so the fighter wants a bigger sword? Then he's gotta bleed for it, not you).

Ah! There we go. I thought I had seen that 5gp = 1XP rule somewhere.

I'm probably blind as well: I faintly recall the DMG mentioning something about replacing XP cost with "power components" or some such. Where would it say that? Or maybe was it sacrificing other magic items, i don't recall.

That house rule for the fighter exchanging XP is cool. Is it somewhere I can see it?

The house rule's right there. Since it's a house rule, you just have to get the DM's approval (this is not applicable, if you're the DM, of course) and use it. How you want to do it is up to you (sharing of XP, he paying all of it, he paying most of it, you paying a symbolix 1 XP or something...)

I also recall having something read about "power components" but that doesn't have to be in the DMG, it could as well have been here at the boards. The whole thing is up to the DM, he might suggest some special material after he hears of the item that is created, and you go off aquire it. It can save you some XP and it can also be an adventure hook.

They're mentioned but not specified in the DMG.

Thanks guys. I'll discuss it with the DM.

BTW, KaeYoss, I would change your sig to read:

The Nine Planes of Hell

The Political Layer
The Financial Layer
The Application Layer
The Presentation Layer
The Session Layer
The Transport Layer
The Network Layer
The Data Link Layer
The Physical Layer

:D

Found it! DMG p96, Variant: Power Components. Interesting adventure hooks...

Where do you live there? In the Physical Layer, where you get shieldet, twisted and paired?

Unfortunately, I live mostly in the Political Layer, where I get promises, encouragement, and eventually, inevitably, disappointment. :)
