MCDM - Crows?

Sales pitch is sales pitch. I think they've been pretty open about most of their sources/influences. I do think Matt's enthusiastic claim in the video that "you die all the time!" is a bit misguided and probably not accurate, but we'll see!

Its funny as I've been doing a whole bunch of reading, and the 'you wont live to see level 2!' has been cautioned as maybe not how to phrase it for a long time.

Right. In this campaign we can see that James the designer is clearly pretty well acquainted with a lot of OSR design, but Matt... not so much.

Of course Matt may be getting this impression because he personally has only or mostly played one-shots in testing. People get the wrong impression about DCC, as well, when they assume that funnels are the primary mode of play.

Side note: I have gotten some sads/frustration from what a high percentage of convention DCC games seem to be funnels. Those are fun occasionally, but I'd like to actually engage with the real DCC mechanics and character abilities!

Yea makes sense.

I also think it’s a shame more people don’t get to play higher level DCC. I’m a little frustrated with the game I’m in, it’s a public game and runs about once a month but XP, even when adjusted to be more like it is btb, is slow.

Also I agree that by design funnels were not meant to be the primary mode of play but by the nature of reality I think it has become so.

Maybe I should just embrace that.

I wonder if CROWS would feel like a funnel for early games? Seems so. I wonder if it’ll have the same kind if result as with DCC? It kinda becoming the way people play it due to the nature of how it can get to the table, one shots at cons and stores etc.

100%. I don't particularly like funnels in any game and it's frustrating that discussion of them dominates discussion of so many games, especially DCC.

When I was pitching Crows to some friends to play one of them asked if it had a funnel. It seems like it's become a pretty pervasive stereotype for OSR and OSR-Adjacent games.
